Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol. 3. What is the true meaning or spirit of Christmas? The true spirit of Christmas is the importance of sharing and giving love and joy to the people around us.

A Christmas Carol is a novel by English author Charles Dickens, first published on December 19, 1843. It tells the story of bitter old miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation, resulting from supernatural visits by Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come. The novel met with instant success and critical acclaim.

While A Christmas Carol brings to readers images of light, joy, warmth and life, it also brings strong and unforgettable images of darkness, despair, coldness, sadness and death. Scrooge himself is the embodiment (体现) of winter, and, just as winter is followed by spring and the renewal of life, so too is Scrooge’s cold, pinched heart restored to the innocent goodwill he had known in his childhood and youth.

Read again and decide the sentences are true or false. Scrooge is unfriendly to others. Jacob Marley used to work together with Scrooge. Jacob Marley and Scrooge are different in characters. Jacob Marley wants to help Scrooge. T T F T

2c Read and complete the chart. What does Scrooge see when he’s with … the Ghost of Christmas Past? his happier days as a child how others were spending Christmas that year the Ghost of Christmas Present? the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come? nobody cares when he dies

2d Answer the questions. Why does Scrooge hate Christmas? Does Scrooge have a lot of friends? Why or why not? Because Scrooge is mean and only thinks about himself. He doesn’t treat others nicely, and he only cares about whether he can make more money. No, he has no friends. / No, he doesn’t have a lot of friends. Because he wasn’t nice to people and never laughs or smiles. He is mean and only thinks about himself.

3. Why was Jacob Marley punished after he died? 4. Does Jacob Marley want to help Scrooge? How do you know? Because like Scrooge, he wasn’t nice to others and he only cared about money. Yes, Jacob Marley wants to help Scrooge. Because Marley’s ghost tried to warn Scrooge to change his ways so as not to end up like him.

5. How does Scrooge feel when he wakes up on Christmas Day? 6. What does Scrooge do after seeing the three spirits? He feels relieved because he was scared in his sleep and he is surprised and happy to have a chance to change his life because it is only the next morning. Scrooge changes his ways and becomes a better person.

Pair work 2e What do you think the three ghosts say to Scrooge when they visit him? In groups of four, make a conversation between the three ghosts and Scrooge.
