What is BEST? Boosting Engineering, Science & Technology Founded in Texas in 1993 by two engineers Student teams are guided by professional mentors and school coaches. BEST has expanded to 14 states an over 800 participating schools. Students have six weeks to design, develop, build and test a robot that can outperform their competitors. Each team receives identical kits of parts Winning teams from each Hub compete at the Regional competitions. (TX Best, South’s Best, Frontier Trails Best)

Regional competition… Frontier Trails BEST in Fort Smith, Arkansas. November 30 – December 1, 2012 Heartland BEST will send 4 teams. The BEST Award All teams that compete are eligible (must inform HL BEST of intent to participate by Sept. 24th ) A panel of judges will evaluate each school using a 100 point grading system Project Engineering Notebook 25 Marketing/Oral Presentation 25 Table Displays/Team Exhibit 20 Spirit and Sportsmanship 15 Robot Performance 15

Separate from the BEST Award and Game Award Special Awards Separate from the BEST Award and Game Award Most Robust Robot - for the machine requiring the least maintenance during the contest. Robustness during matches, minimal maintenance required between matches, general sturdiness and durability. Most Photogenic Robot - for the most eye-pleasing, functioning machine. Most Elegant Robot - for the machine with best-of-show design and execution. The machine that makes you say, “Wow!” Founders Award for Creative Design - for the most unusual approach to solving the problem. Utilizing creative, unusual, and/or unique offensive and/or defensive machine capabilities. BEST T-shirt Design –judged at game day, voted on by teams. T-shirts to be turned in on Mall Day. Kits – Overview Consumable Kit – PVC, plywood, wire, switches, hardware, adhesives, igus components, etc. Items can be modified, and can also be replenished by teams as needed. Returnable Kit – Controller, microcontroller, batteries, chargers, electronic components, etc. In general, items cannot be modified. HL BEST Items – Yellow toolbox, black SUV box, etc. (please take care of these items and return with your returnable kit at the end of the competition)

2012 BEST Game Intro –> Warp XX Tasks for robot to accomplish: Remove the Waste Cargo Balls from the base rack (tiebreaker) Trigger the summit indicator flag at the Midway Station. (at top of space elevator) Transport Light Cargo Balls from the cargo ship to the cargo bin on Midway Station. Move the Waste Cargo Balls to the cargo ship. Retrieve the Clear Fuel Bottle from Midway Station and store it on the base rack.

If one team qualifies in 2 of the above categories, then the 3rd place BEST team advances.
