Newtons first Law Of motion

What is Newton's First Law of Motion? An object at rest or in motion will continue at a constant velocity unless acted on by an unbalanced force

- Example- my window will not open itself, it will stay motionless What does that mean? Objects at rest will not move unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. - Example- my window will not open itself, it will stay motionless Objects in motion will continue to move at a constant speed and in a straight line unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. - Example- if I throw a football in outer space, it will continue forever (unless stopped by a force)

Force and Motion: Newton's First Law & Inertia What is inertia? The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion. Example: the car stops, but your body moves forward More mass = more inertia

What does inertia have to do with matter and Newton's First Law? Mass is directly related to inertia objects with large mass have more inertia (they are harder to move) objects with large mass accelerate less than objects with small mass when accelerated by the same force

Who has more mass, superman, or the baby? Who has more inertia, superman or the baby? Who is easier to pick up (or change their motion) If you were to throw two objects with the same mass as the baby and superman, which would you throw farther?

Inertia and Seatbelts: Upon contact with the wall, an unbalanced force acts upon the car to abruptly decelerate it to rest. Any passengers in the car will also be decelerated to rest if they are strapped to the car by seat belts. Being strapped tightly to the car, the passengers share the same state of motion as the car. As the car accelerates, the passengers accelerate with it; as the car decelerates, the passengers decelerate with it; and as the car maintains a constant speed, the passengers maintain a constant speed as well. But, what if you weren’t wearing a seatbelt?

What if the ladder were not strapped down? If the truck were to abruptly stop and the straps were no longer functioning, then the ladder in motion would continue in motion. Assuming a negligible amount of friction between the truck and the ladder, the ladder would slide off the top of the truck and be hurled into the air. Once it leaves the roof of the truck, it becomes a projectile and continues in projectile-like motion.

And, let’s not forget the motorcycle man who also chose to not wear a seatbelt…
