Comparative analysis of insulations located horizontal on the floor and/or vertical beside the foundation both winter and summer conditions Péter MEDGYASSZAY Budapest University of Technology and Economics - Faculty of Civil Engineering Department of Construction Materials and Technologies - medgyasszay.peter@epito.bme.hu

Objectives Floor on the ground Background: Climate Change … Optimization of envelope Reduction of COeq2 emission Reduction of primer energy consumption mitigation Floor on the ground with vertical and/or horizontal insulation Background: Climate Change Provide the appropriate indoor climate Cooling Passive cooling by thermal mass … adaptation

Methods 1: Energy calculation according to the Hungarian standards (detailed method) to calculate the delivered energy and the primer energy consumption. 2: Dynamic building simulation to calculate the net energy need and the „number of uncomfortable hours” (PMV>1,08). 3: Heat-transfer simulation (2D, steady-state and transient) to calculate the lineal thermal transmittance and to understand the effect of different seasons. 4: On site measurement to validate the results.

Results 1: According to the steady-state heat transfer simulation the horizontal insulation was cca. 30% more effective to reduce the heat losses, than the vertical one. 2: According to the dynamic building simulation the vertical insulation was much more effective to provide the appropriate indoor climate in summer period than the horizontal one. 3: According to the on site measures the energy consumption were both case lower than the worse case energy calculation. 4: The transient heat transfer might show that the vertical insulation do not cat the internal space from the ground which can activate a huge thermal mass to balance the indoor temperature in summer period.
