Monitor and Clarify: A Reading Strategy Created by Mrs. Cowan

What is clarify? Clarify is when you stop to make the sure the meaning of the text is clear to the reader. Clarify is when you use various strategies to figure out the meaning of the text.

What is monitor? Monitor is when you stop to make sure you understand what you are reading. Monitor is very similar to questioning but monitor focuses on making sure you understand.

When do you monitor/clarify a text? As a reader, you can monitor/clarify a text DURING reading. As a reader, you can monitor/clarify a text AFTER reading. In other words, monitor/clarify the text during and after reading.

How do you monitor/clarify? Ask yourself is what you are reading makes sense. If it does not, re-read it! Look at the pictures for clues. Keep reading for context clues. Ask a friend.

Questions to monitor/clarify a text? What is happening in the story? What clues have led you to think that? Does that make sense? Does this text remind you of anything you already know?

Your turn to monitor/clarify the text. Smells of Summer There are certain things in summer That smell real nice to me The moss and ferns and woodsy things I like especially The grassy lawn just freshly cut The fragrant stacks of hay The clean outdoors when it has rained The salty ocean spray-

Your turn to monitor/clarify the text. Pine needles warming in the sun Fresh corn, and berries, too, Bright flowers in a big bouquet- I like these smells, don't you? -Vivian Gouled

Now your turn to monitor/clarify the text. Turn to a partner and discuss the text. Be sure to monitor and clarify your understanding of the text. Remember, monitor/clarify is a way to make sure you understand a text.

Conclusion Monitor/Clarify requires the reader to ask questions during and after reading. Monitor/Clarify is a way to check for understanding. Monitor/Clarify requires the use of additional strategies to ensure comprehension.
