Presentation transcript:

Bellwork Your friend wants you to go to the mall for dinner then go Christmas shopping on Wednesday. You have a big test in Math on Thursday and you are not sure what to do… With your immediate neighbor – Make a pros (>2) and cons (>2) list List possible alternatives (1-2) for your decision What did you decide?

Today’s Goals I can identify four factors that influence our health I can identify strategies and techniques for making healthful decisions I can relate the importance and benefit of healthful decision-making to each health wheel I can follow a three-step plan for healthy decision-making I can identify consequences associated with poor decision-making

Decision Making Importance Decisions you make reflect your values and the values established by your family Values: The ideas, beliefs, and attitudes surrounding what is important that help guide the way you live What is a value that has been instilled in your family?

Brain POP - Ethics What is a good value to have? Honesty; Love; Kindness What is a bad value to have? Lying; Hate; Cruelty Critical Thinking: Is it illegal to lie?

Why is developing strategies for decision-making important? Can promote health and safety Allows for self-respect/confidence Demonstrates good character Allows you to follow a healthful plan (a guide) Exit Ticket: Place each of the reasons above into one of the health wheels

Decision making scenario… What should he do?

Bellwork: What are some decisions you will need to make in your lifetime? List as many as possible

Here’s the situation… Prom is 2 weeks away. Joe has asked his friend Jill to go to the prom with him. The two have been friends since elementary school and are looking forward to a fun night. Jill has her dress ready, her hair appointment made and they have a limo reserved.

This morning in first period Kaylee, the girl Joe has had a major crush on for months asked him if he would go to the prom with her. What should Joe do? Work with a partner to come up with a pros and cons list. List possible alternatives for all parties.

How did you make your decision?

Decision-making Skills – H.E.L.P. H (healthful) – does this choice present any health risks? E (ethical) – does this choice reflect what you value? L (legal) – does this choice violate laws? P (parent approval) – would your parents or guardians approve of this choice?

The 3 C’s C - Clarify C - Consider C - Choose

The 3 C’s Clarify the problem or the decision to be made. ASK QUESTIONS! Consider the possible alternatives (think about the different things you might decide to do) and the consequences of choosing each alternative; collect any additional information needed (think up as many solutions as possible). Choose the best alternative and take the necessary action. Be sure to follow through on your decision.

Create your own decision-making scenario Must be realistic You must respond properly, highlighting the 3 C’s of decision-making Share

POP Quiz Look over your Decision-making notes for 5 minutes

Decision-Making “Live life by choice rather than chance” You create opportunities for yourself by making informed decisions

Pick Up Sticks I challenge you to beat me in this game Whoever draws the last “stick” loses Maximum 3 “sticks” per draw

Discussion Questions Why was it hard to beat me at this game? What did the teacher know that you did not? How much of an advantage is it in a game to know something that the rest of the players don’t know? Name some other examples where information can be an important factor in how well you do in something. **How can we relate this to alcohol, tobacco, drugs or sexual behavior? What happens if you get information that is incorrect? How does knowledge give you an advantage over others? KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!!
