HOW TO MOTIVATE LEARNING (MAGIC WANDS AND SPELLS) BARCELONA, UB 7TH MAY 2014 rgomez@iccic.edu rgomezcic.pbworks.com CIC IDIOMES RAQUEL GOMEZ, EFL TEACHER AND TRAINER

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? What is “disruptive behaviour”? Strategies to avoid it (or minimize it) in the classroom. An engaging example using technology - wikis: what? how? why? Further possibilities and advantages for us, teachers, and them, students. Questions, feedback & wrap-up.

ARE THERE ANY MAGIC WANDS OR SPELLS FOR KIDS WHO ARE NOT SO INTO LEARNING? 30’’ IN PAIRS OR THREES

SORRY BUT … NO!!!

WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY…? ·DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR 3 ‘ IN PAIRS OR THREES

NOT SO IDEAL CONTEXTS · TEENAGERS AND HORMONES · EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES · BIG NUMBERS IN CLASSES · MIXED ABILITIES (MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES) AND DIFFERENT MOTIVATION LEVELS · you name it

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR: Any action, overt or covert, that undermines the cohesion of the class. PRODROMOU, L. & CLANDFIELD, L. (2007) Dealing with difficulties. http://es.scribd.com/doc/117696886/Dealing-with-difficulties

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR It can be turned into a learning opportunity. Language teaching is not just about teaching a language. HARMER, J. (2007): The Practice of English Language Teaching.

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR CAUSES BOREDOM LEARNING DIFFICULTIES LACK OF MOTIVATION LEVEL DIFFERENCES TIREDNESS FAMILY PROBLEMS

HOW TO APPROACH DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR DIRECT CONFRONTATION IS LESS LIKELY TO ACHIEVE OUR OBJECTIVE – TEACHING

HOW TO APPROACH DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR DIFFERENT STRATEGIES AT DIFFERENT TIMES DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR GOLDEN RULES ENGAGEMENT POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT (BUT MEANING IT) AVOID LOSING YOUR TEMPER DIFFERENT KIDS, DIFFERENT STRATEGIES CLEAR RULES EXTRA TASKS

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR SOME CONCLUSIONS WARNING: Behaviour, either positive or negative , is contagious!!! RAP Rapport Attitude Presence POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE BONDING: “JOLLY THEM ALONG” TEACHING PEOPLE SO TREAT THEM AS SUCH

DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOUR SOME CONCLUSIONS If neither plan A nor plan B work, there are 24 more letters in the English alphabet

WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY…? WIKIS 3 ‘ IN PAIRS OR THREES

WIKIS Definition: a website which allows its readers to freely add and edit content and to create links between different pieces of content. MACMILLAN DICTIONARY

WEBSITES TO CREATE WIKIS PBworks http://pbworks.com Wikispaces http://wikispaces.com Edit Me http://www.editme.com Wordpress http://wordpress.org Google Docs http://docs.google.com Wetpaint http://www.wetpaint.com Wikis comparison tool http://www.wikimatrix.org http://www.theconsultants-e.com

HOW TO CREATE A WIKI USING PBWORKS 1. Access http://pbworks.com/ and click on Get Started.

2. Choose k-12 Education and select Basic (Free).

3. Create an address and a password for your wiki.

4. Check your email to confirm your account with pbworks. 5. In the window below, choose Anyone, Agree and access your workspace.

FURTHER STEPS RENAME FRONT PAGE AND ADD CONTENT CREATE PAGES AND LINKS ADD CONTENT TO YOUR NEW PAGE INSERT A TABLE (HOMEWORK, CALENDAR) UPLOAD FILES CREATE USERNAMES FOR YOUR STUDENTS

POSSIBILITIES WITHOUT USERNAMES: POST LINKS, HOMEWORK CHARTS AND CALENDARS, USEFUL DOCUMENTS. WITH USERNAMES (AND ONLY WRITER PRIVILEGES): THEY CAN ALWAYS COMMENT BUT NEVER MESS AROUND WITH YOUR MATERIAL.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

EXPRESSING OPINION

RECYCLING LEXIS THROUGH DEFINITIONS

CREATIVE TIME YOU HAVE 3 MINUTES TO COME UP WITH IDEAS TO USE THE WIKI IN TEACHING

ACTIVITIES ANY WHICH INVOLVES COMMUNICATION AMONG THEM PLUS SHARING QUESTIONS OR LINKS WITH THE GROUP. QUIZ: DEFINITIONS, IDIOMS OR DEPENDANT PREPOSITIONS. WRITING STORIES FROM PICTURES. SONG-RELATED ACTIVITIES. SELF-REFLECTION EXERCISES. LISTENING OR VIDEOS AT THEIR OWN PACE. …

ADVANTAGES FOR TEACHERS MATERIAL IS ALWAYS ORGANISED AND IT’S EASILY TRANSFERABLE. IT IS ANOTHER WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH STUDENTS WITH REAL PURPOSES. EASILY SET UP. FREE. WITH UNLIMITED POSSIBILITES OF COLLABORATIVE WORK.

ADVANTAGES FOR STUDENTS EASY ACCESS TO MATERIAL – OPEN SPACE. INTERACTION AMONGST THEM – USE THE LANGUAGE FOR REAL COMMUNICATION. GREAT MOTIVATION TO ACCURACY IN THEIR WORK BECAUSE IT IS PUBLIC. THEY USE THEIR COMPUTERS OR SMARTPHONES TO DO THEIR WORK: WE SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE 24/7. NO IDENTITY ISSUES (NO PHOTOS OR PERSONAL DATA).

WRAP- UP WHAT HAVE WE DONE? We are more familiar with the concept “disruptive behaviour” We have experienced strategies to minimize it in the classroom: elements of surprise - sense of humour positive atmosphere - music organic classroom - participation passion about what we do - human factor and MI We have learned about wikis and their possibilities
