Neath Port Talbot College Braking Systems Anthony Davison Welcome to Neath Port Talbot College! Anthony Davison Brakes

Braking Systems Most light vehicles have both front and rear braking. These are used to slow or stop the car. Most cars have a parking brake or hand brake to keep the car stationary when parked. Handbrake travel can be adjusted on the lever and with correct shoe adjustment

Automobile Brakes - A Short Course on How They Work At home you can access this site by typing in the web address below. www.familycar.com

Pipes & Hoses Brake Pipe Lines From Master Cylinder Solid pipes run the length of the vehicle Flexible brake pipes are found where chassis movement is found

Pressing the Brake Brake Pedal Operation Can you name another important device that is operated at this point Brake light switch

Pressing the Brake Master cylinder Brake fluid reservoir Metal brake pipes

Front Brakes Brake pads Flexible brake pipe Brake pads & caliper Brake disc

Checking Brake Pads Q What is the minimum thickness of the brake lining ? A Approx 3 mm (AON collecting data) Q What is the reason for the copper grease ? A It is used to lubricate moving parts and reduce squealing on operation Q Name 2 other check that could be made to a vehicle within this picture ? A 1 condition of disc 2 condition of flexible brake pipe

Brake Disc Inspection Surface should be checked for scores and an edge lip Disc Thickness is checked across here Edge lip is found here

Brakes and Technical Data Brake disc dimensions as found on “Auto Data” Keyskills ICT Collecting data

Checking Brake Pads CDX Video demonstrations

Rear Brakes Brake shoes Inspection Note the rear wheel bearing It is a tapered bearing

Brakes and Health & Safety Brake dust is highly dangerous. Before work is carried out brake spray should be sprayed to prevent dust being inhaled

Checking Rear Brake Components Name 3 typical checks that should be made to the components shown in the picture Check rear wheel cylinders for leaking Check condition and wear of brake linings Check security of components and adjustments

Brake Shoe Inspection Inside a wheel cylinder

Brake Master Cylinder Brake fluid is hydroscopic What does this mean : Ans It means that the fluid can absorb moisture and thus lose its viscosity. For this reason brake fluid should be changed approx every 20,000 miles Brake fluid must also have a high boiling point as friction caused by operating brakes causes heat. Evaporative lock is when brake fluid gets so hot it evaporates and acts as if there is air in the system.

Correct Brake Fluid The correct brake fluid must be sought for the vehicle. By referencing “Auto Data” etc, you can access the manufactures recommended grade

Brake Test Efficiency Testing brake performance on a rolling road

Brake Efficiency The MOT requirement of a car states that the brake efficiency for the Foot or Service brake brake is at least 50% efficient The hand brake on modern cars must be 16% efficient

Calculating Brake Efficiency Using a rolling road brake tester as shown you would collect the brake reading for all the four wheels. Using the four reading you would calculate the efficiency by using the formula shown.

Calculating Brake Efficiency Brake efficiency formula (AON keyskill collecting data) TOTAL BRAKE EFFORT VEHICLE WEIGHT X 100 = BRAKE EFFICIENCY IN % Service or pedal brake must be more than 50% efficient to pass MOT The Hand brake must be more that 16% to pass

Brakes What’s Next ?? The next lessons to be covered in braking systems are. Self servo action of brake shoes. This will allow you to complete all outcomes of practical task 10 in you workshop assessments. Carrying out a brake efficiency test
