Cells and cellular transport

What the state wants you to know Cell Objectives State standard - HS-LS1-3. Provide evidence that homeostasis maintains internal body conditions through both body-wide feedback mechanisms and small-scale cellular processes. Cellular processes include (a) passive transport and active transport of materials across the cell membrane to maintain specific concentrations of water and other nutrients in the cell and (b) the role of lysosomes in recycling wastes, macromolecules, and cell parts into monomers.

Unpacking the standard Students should be able to: 1. Correctly label a eukaryotic cell. 2. Correctly label a nerve cell. 3. Describe the job of the cell the parts identified in the eukaryotic cell. Identify the cell wall, chloroplast in a plant cell. 4. Distinguish between plant, animal and bacterial cells. Compare and contrast the similarities and difference between these three cell types. 5. Identify prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells 6. Describe osmosis of water in and out of the cell. Define and use the terms hypotonic, hypertonic and Isotonic correctly. 7. Describe the process of diffusion of molecules into and out of the cell. 8. Describe active and passive transport systems. Give an example of each. 9. Describe the activation of a nerve impulse and how they transmit a message in the human system.

How will we learn the first three standards? Assignments : Look up the cell parts listed on the hand out given to you in class. Watch the video to review the function of the cells parts. Write your answers on the sheet provided. Color and label a eukaryotic animal cell and plant cell. Color and label the nerve cell picture as well.

Hypotonic, hypertonic and Isotonic After watching the video and based on our work in the potato lab, you should be able to; Describe the process of osmosis and diffusion in a cell. You should be able to describe and define the concept of isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic conditions. Create a drawing of 3 conditions during the potato lab that demonstrate these words in action.

Plasma Membrane The primary function of the plasma membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, the plasma membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules and regulates the movement of substances in and out of cells.
