ESGARD - 19th May 06 Very brief summary! 32 LOIs received LHC Upgrade DS 1 JRA 3 TA 23M€ Proton accel. 4 p-ion accel. 2 Intense ion beams CNI 94+?M€ CLIC 7 37M€ SCRF ILC 75M€ Neutrino DS+I3 20M€ Laser-plasma accel Φ Factory ?

ESGARD - 19th May 06 In total: - CNI 2 - DS 5 - JRA 24 - TA 1 - Cost 249M€+? Too many/much: must be reduced! ESGARD will - combine overlapping LOIs - clarify some - call for talks (at CARE06?) - prioritise Priorities must be consistent with CERN SG 1st idea (not discussed or agreed): - proton related I3 - LC (CLIC+ILC) I3

What about us? Four areas of work identified: Feasibility study Accelerator R&D Detector R&D Physics

Feasibility Study Obvious match to DS Worry is priority But……… - ESGARD acknowledges FP6 problem - ILC care mainly about CNI - DS’s are only small now Need to persuade Roy/ESGARD

Accelerator R&D 3(+) possbilities Neutrino I3 (inc. FS & detector R&D) - priority will be a problem (3rd out of 3?) - how many PP I3’s will EU approve? - best way, if successful - most likely way of getting nothing! JRAs in proton I3 - 1st priority - number of JRAs limited - would need careful negotiation to maximise - other programmes for lost JRAs - SCRF CNI-R&D: 200&700MHz SC RF - CNI-R&D: target test facility, MICE, etc? - oncology: FFAGs JRAs in a neutron + muon I3?

Detector R&D + Physics Neutrino detector I3? - precedent exists (EUDET?) - later round than CARE - not in ESGARDs remit - EU may ask ESGARD/ECFA anyway - need ESGARD-independent advice - other possibilities? - astro-particle rather than PP? FP7: * Cooperation * People * Capacities – Research Infrastructures * Ideas – ERC: research projects at science frontiers

Detector R&D + Physics Physics? - do we need funding? - is BENE enough?

For me......for accel. R&D….. Neutrino I3 is too risky Need to know more about ERC and other programmes Proton I3: focus more on technology than science Has already worked: - HIPPI - EMMA - RACCAM - (MERIT) - (Beta beam) Exception: MICE – but this been a struggle in EU

Next Step Need clear definition of R&D required to - determine scale of problem - prioritise - see where it may fit - start negotiations - prepare good presentation for ESGARD
