Objectives – Planning Phase Exploratory planning steps to establish a GEOHealth Hub for Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. To conduct Situational Analysis and Needs Assessments on three targeted areas; indoor and outdoor air quality, occupational health and safety; and climate change. Assessment of key stakeholder activities, and an inventory of training, research, policy and outreach capacity. Foster partnerships within/between the Eastern African and US partners to strengthen training, research and policy making activities

History of Preventive Medicine 1977: Department of Family and Preventive Medicine was formed and chaired by Dr. Brian Henderson. 1980: Division of Occupational and Environmental Health was established. 1983: The Dept incorporated the faculty of the Institute for Prevention Research (IPR), and formed the Division of Health Behavior Research. 1984: The Dept became the Department of Preventive Medicine when the independent Dept of Family Medicine was formed. 1996: The Cancer Surveillance Program and the Divisions of Biostatistics, Occupational & Environmental Health, and Health Behavior Research moved into the Center for Health Profession (CHP) building. 1997: The Division of Epidemiology moved into the Norman Topping Tower of the Norris Cancer Center.

Research Setup and Timeline

Aims of the Training component (U2R) Immersion for Lead Scientists in research, curriculum development, and policy three separate cohorts for training in the US at USC, UW-M and SC-AQMD (Yrs 1,3,5) follow-up training through distance-based approaches, workshops, and mentored research experience. Curriculum development for training in exposure assessment, research methods and health assessment Targeted training for research teams (Yrs 1-3) in exposure assessment, respiratory disease research methods, and health assessment To expand program through dissemination at national and regional levels via Workshops and sharing of curriculum –including on-line curricula, research mentorships and academic degree programs to reach across the region. To develop case-based and other approaches for translating research findings into policies, regulations and other actions by working with appropriate stakeholders
