The European network for observing our changing planet ERA-PLANET www.era-planet.eu Nicola Pirrone ERA-PLANET Coordinator GEO Principal of Italy Director CNR-Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research Rome, Italy CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

16 Countries 35 Beneficiaries 52 M€ Total Cost 11 M€ EU Top Up Period: 2016 - 2021 CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Overarching Objective To strengthen the European Research Area in the domain of Earth Observation in coherence with the European participation to Group on Earth Observation (GEO) and the Copernicus. CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Implementation ERA-PLANET STRAND 1 STRAND 3 STRAND 2 STRAND 4 Smart cities and resilient societies STRAND 3 Global change and Environmental treaties STRAND 2 Resource efficiency & environmental management STRAND 4 Polar areas and natural resources Implementation CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Expected Impact Reinforcement of European leadership within GEO (2016-2025) Coordination and integration of major European research and innovation programmes on EO Fostering a wider exploitation and use of EO derived information for the benefit of citizen´s daily life Support an effective implementation of environmental policies Improve and select effective environmental indicators for different end-users and support the 2030 Agenda on SD CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Expected Impact Maximisation of value and benefits of EO investments through the improvement of shared architectural components and related information infrastructures Development of sustainable and interoperable observational, modelling, data assimilation and prediction systems CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Two-Step Evaluation Process ERA-PLANET Two-Step Evaluation Process Submitted 11 proposals to Step-1 JT Call Approved 9 proposals for STEP-2 Step-2 Call was launched on January 20th 2017 as planned Deadline for proposals submission for Step-2 is May 20th 2017 External Expert Panel for proposal evaluation will meet the second week of June Evaluation of Step-2 will be completed on June 30th CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Two-Step Evaluation Process ERA-PLANET Two-Step Evaluation Process July 1st will start negotiation with the four selected proposals’ consortia Negotiation with approval of GA and CA for each proposal will be completed by August 20 All four projects will start on September 1st Joint Kick-off meeting to be held in Brussels by end of September 2017. The projects will end on August 30th of 2020 The ERA-PLANET will end on January 30th of 2021. CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

The four approved projects ERA-PLANET The four approved projects SMURBS SMart URBan Solutions for air quality, disasters and city growth Coordinator: Evangelos Garasopoulos, NOA, Greece GEOEssential Essential Variables workflows for resource efficiency and environmental management Coordinator: Anthony Leahmann, University of Geneva, Switzerland IGOSP Integrated Global Observing Systems for Persistent Pollutants Coordinator: Nicola Pirrone, CNR, Italy iCUPE Integrative and Comprehensive Understanding on Polar Environments Coordinator: Tuukka Petaja, University of Helsinki, Finland CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Beyond 2020 ERA-PLANET will end in January 2021 and will deliver to the scientific community and national governments the Strategic Research Agenda to reinforce the ERA and to coordinate the cross- and inter-cooperation of European and national programs in key and selected EO domains. ERA-PLANET will support EuroGEOSS In cooperation with major EU players on EO and data science (i.e., ESA) by the 2020 ERA-PLANET aims to facilitate and improve the interoperability among the existing and future projects and infrastructures on EO and links to the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI). CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Beyond 2020 ERA-PLANET is very strategic for the implementation of EU Space Policy in strategic sectors of Earth Observation through a strong integration of GEOSS and Copernicus by merging in-situ and space observations in the domain of: urban areas and resilient societies, resource efficiency and environmental management, global change and environmental treaties, and polar areas and natural resources CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

Beyond 2020 Having the above in mind it would be strategic to ensure the continuation of ERA-PLANET beyond 2020. It would provide a valuable contribution to EuroGEOSS and specifically to GEO (2020-2025) and EU Space Policy through an effective integration of space and in-situ observation and by stimulating the creation of advanced technological sectors for environmental monitoring to support the implementation of EU and international environmental policy. CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it

How ERA-PLANET can contribute to EuroGEOSS It will deliver a strategic research agenda for GEO (2020-2025) with reference to the topic related to Strands-1 to 4 To support EuroGEOSS development To support the GOS4M GEO flagship and GOS4POPs GEO Initiative which are aimed ot support the implementation of the Minamata and Stockholm Conventions To contribute to the 2030 Agenda on SD CNR – Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research, Rome, Italy http://www.iia.cnr.it
