ROBOTICS Unit 7 What is a robot?

Today’s Lesson Objectives: Brainstorm about robot definition (10 min) “Kismet” video (5 min) Elements of a Robot (10 min) I am a Robot? Activity 1 (15 min) Student group work – Are we Robots (15 min) Research Issac Asimov’s three Laws of Robotics

Brainstorm What do you think when you hear “robot”.

Possible answers Movie and TV robots: Wall-E, iRobot, Rosie from the Jetsons Modern Industrial robots: assembly line factory work Mars Rovers iRobot robots Vacuum cleaner Robots built for military use Bomb detection

Video Kismet: http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/eng06.sci.e ngin.design.kismet/kismet-the-social-robot/

Common features of Robots What do robots have in common? What tasks are easy for robots? What tasks are hard for robots?

Answer Robots are often used for dangerous or repetitive task such as recovering bombs, search and rescue operations in dangerous conditions where the robots search and the humans rescue, factory work. Robots are replaceable, unlike humans, and don’t get bored or make mistakes when doing the same thing over and over. Tasks that require judgement or human- like interaction such as recognizing when there is a problem or walking and seeing like humans are hard for robots.

What is a Robot? Handout See Piazza

Am I a robot Handout #1 Pictures of basic appliances Does it meet five (5) criterias Body Input programmable Output Behavior (Teacher note, see Page 264)

Are we Robots Handout #2 Work in groups of 4 or less Determine if meets five criterias for robot Add more items

Isaac Asimov’s 3 Laws of Robotics Reasearch 3 laws of robotics What is Law Zero?

3 Laws of Robotics Law Zero: A robot may not injure humanity, or through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. Law One: A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Law Two: A robot mush obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders conflict with Law One. Law Three: A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with Laws One and Two.
