MOP UP SUBJECTS

Oops! These ones slipped the net!!!! There were some subjects not outlined in the course draft, we are going to mop up these remaining subjects now, such subjects as: CAD CAM ROBOT AUTOMATED MANUFACTURING SHEARING POWDER METALLURGY

C.A.D. Or as it fully known as is Computer Aided Design, is a method of producing technical drawings using a PC. This first started to used in the 1970’s in small scale but really took off in the mid to late 1980’s with programs such as AutoCad. Today you will find it very difficult to find organisations that use the old method of producing technical drawings using a Draughting Board. C.A.M. Abbreviated for Computer Aided Machining / Manufacturing, this is a process that is basically an automated manufacturing process, frequently utilised the use of robots to carry out the main tasks. This process is often used in tandem with C.A.D. such as the process which is used in todays 3d printing sequences. Robot Automated Manufacturing This is where robots effectively take the place of human manual labour within the manufacturing process. Tasks that robots can perform in an industrial way are: car paint spraying, assembly and welding, handling nuclear waste. Future possibilities include carrying out operations on humans! There are more advantages in using robots for manual labour including: Speed with production time Safety with dangerous tasks carried out Overall cost savings

SHEARING With this we do not mean what is done with sheep; it is the process that takes place when metal is cut. This is when shapes are cut from a sheet of metal, on repeated occasions during a production run. POWDER METALLURGY This is the process where metal in particulate or powdered form is mixed into different blends, compressed into a die until it becomes a solid state and then heated / sintered in a furnace atmosphere to just below their melting point. The powder metallurgy manufacturing process allows a range of products to be made out of an option of composite metals.
