Cool-weather area close to San Francisco Bay, slow ripening and high natural fruit acidity. These “Shot-Wente Selection” grapes are an heirloom Chardonnay selection with smaller than normal clusters and grape size, giving more skin to juice ratio making the wine more flavorful. Whole-cluster pressed and fermented in new (25%) and used (75%) French oak barrels using wild yeast and periodic lees stirring. Natural malolactic fermentation occurs without artificial starter. Additional lees contact after barrel fermentation produces a lovely aroma the French call “Noisette” after its hazelnut characteristic. Smooth and luscious. 2016 Sage Canyon Red 45% Carignan (140 years old), 25% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvédre The name derives from the sub-region where the winery is located. The fruit comes from four separate Northern California areas: Grenache from Sierra Foothills, Carignan from Oakley, Mourvédre from southern Sonoma Valley, Syrah from Santa Lucia Highlands. Traditional Rhône Valley processing techniques, crushed by foot and fermented with 100% stem retention for the first 30 days, then drained and pressed. Aged 8-10 months in used 60-gallon French oak barrels. Old-worldy, earthy 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Planted in 1992 by David Abreu, this fruit is located on ground higher than 600 feet of rocky land rich with basalt. Rocky hillsides help control this variety’s vigor producing better wine. This vineyard is one of the rare 10% in Napa Valley capable of producing great Cabernet Sauvignon. French oak aged (40% new, 60% used) Cassis, hints of blackberry, crushed violets, mineral component, pencil lead, cedar, rich softness, lush and lean flavors v. 2014: 94pts Wine Enthusiast 2014 AME Cabernet Sauvignon A vineyard designate, named after the first initial of the Neyer’s three children, Alexandra, Michael, and Elizabeth, “AME” also is the French word for “soul.” This three acre parcel in the highest and rockiest part of the property rises from 800 ft. to 1,200 ft. in elevation, mostly at a 45 degree incline. The south facing slope is planted with heirloom bud with wood that originated at Ch. Margaux in France. The soil is a mix of gravel and large hunks of basalt (limestone-like rock from heavily compacted volcanic ash). Mix of mocha, blackberry, licorice, and graphite, focus and elegant weight. French oak aged (40% new, 60% used) v. 2013: 93pts Wine Spectator, v. 2014: 92pts Wine Enthusiast 2016 Zinfandel Sourced out of Western Calaveras County in the Sierra Foothill AVAs of Clements Hills and Borden Ranch. Remarkable soil combinations that developed from geological activity that formed the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, sitting on an outcropping of quartz. Non-clonal selection of Zinfandel results in small clusters and berries. Cool, evening west to east breezes helps with even ripening as air is pulled up by the sudden rise in elevation. Alcohol level well below 14% even though wine is made from fully ripened fruit. 100% ‘Heirloom’ Zinfandel fermented with native wild yeast. Aged 10 months in neutral 60-gallon French oak barrels. Bottled without fining or filtration. v. 2014: 91pts Wine Spectator 2015 Left Bank Red (OOS) Grapes sourced from the left bank of Conn Creek as it flows from Howell Mountain to Lake Hennessey. The Cabernet vines, now 25 years old, were planted by Dave Abreu on higher elevation, rockier soils on northern-most parcels. Sustainably farmed by the Maldonado Family Farming Company, yields are kept low and the sun follows the vine rows from dawn to dusk resulting in slow, even ripening on the south face of the vines. (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot) Moderate barrel treatment, lower alcohol, and even ripening result in a Bordelais styled wine. Complex, yet bright and fresh, traces of cassis, raspberry, cedar v. 2014: 92pts Wine Spectator TOP ACCOLADES 94 points Wine Enthusiast 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon 93 points, Editors’ Choice Wine Enthusiast 2016 304 Chardonnay 93 points Wine Enthusiast 2014 AME Cabernet Sauvignon
