Technical resources schedule

Resource schedule Since we last reviewed it: Blanco shutdown completed New additions: Stimulus projects Mirror coating chamber upgrade Monsoon Gold / Torrent (placeholders only) TCS project delays? Longer term: ReSTAR Osmos? TripleSpec?

Can we bring NEWFIRM this year? Potential conflicts from Stimulus Package work Pressure from: State of ISPI? DECam TripleSpec (early 2012), OSMOS 2 (late 2012) Otherwise, our ability to handle NEWFIRM largely depends on Tucson, unless there are other unidentified additions…

The Stimulus Package Proposal will contribute to technical resource loading Repair and upgrade Blanco 4m Mirror Coating Chamber Upgrade Blanco 4m Cooling System Upgrade Cerro Tololo UPS to support new instruments (Coudé Room Upgrades for Handling New Instruments) Blanco 4m Computing Room & Console Upgrade for DECam Mountain Electronic Laboratory Equipment Renewal Machine Shop Modification & Refurbishment Cerro Pachón Dorm Emergency Generator Mountain Meeting Rooms Renovation La Serena Laboratory Equipment Renewal CNC Milling Machine and tools for the La Serena instrument shop Replacement OTDR unit for fiber communications installation/repairs Entrance Protection at Blanco 4m Telescope Cerro Tololo/Pachón Water System Renovation Mountain Road Guardrail Installation Cerro Tololo Dormitories Repair and Renovation Cerro Pachón Kitchen & Dining Facility La Serena Compound Water System Renovation Cerro Tololo Houses Repair and Renovation La Serena Meeting Rooms Renovation Repair and Renewal of Security Fencing for La Serena Compound Vehicle Fleet Renewal Bold: heavy on Technical Services Regular: possible load on Technical Services Small: no load on Technical services

Tucson support requirements Software training and support NOCS Phil Daly, Bob Marshall DHS Mike Fitzpatrick Guider Dave Mills DPP Mark Dickinson, Frank Valdes, Rob Seaman Electronics training and installation/commissioning on site; continuing support Ron George, Jack Carlson, Shelby Gott Instrument scientist site visit for installation and commissioning, and handoff to CTIO instrument scientist Ron Probst 2009/02/23 Getting NEWFIRM to CTIO - TMCA - Tucson

La Serena & Cerro Tololo staff 1 Computer support with knowledge of new TCS interfaces, NEWFIRM GUIs, DHS, and pipeline. There is currently no single obvious candidate for all this (Rolo, Francisco?) ~1 – 2 months spent in Tucson and Kitt Peak getting up to speed before NEWFIRM is shut down. Closely involved with the integration & installation at Blanco. Available for support at the ~30%+ level for the first year Mechanical design, drafting & fab ~1 FTE month ME during semester 09B for adapting the cell & surveying feed locations ~1 FTE month MD throughout 09B for support of ME ~1 FTE month MF in late 09B for adapting the cell & running feeds. These estimates are in doubt to the extent that we are not sure yet how to combine NEWFIRM and DECam cryogenic & gas feeds. 2009/02/23 Getting NEWFIRM to CTIO - TMCA - Tucson

La Serena & Cerro Tololo staff 2 Electronics support ~1 FTE week of Monsoon expert (Ricardo, Peter, Marco, or some combination) during integration & installation ~1 FTE month of EA/ET level support, including training by Tucson-based equivalent during a site visit for integration and installation; this person would be on-site expert for electronics support (David Rojas &/or Enrique Schmidt). Cryogenics support A small fraction of a likely candidate should be identified for training to provide technical support of the cryo system from La Serena. (We’re lacking in this area in general right now.) Science support A NEWFIRM support scientist/team (Brooke, Nicole, Jayadev?) should be identified to take part in all phases of getting the instrument on the telescope and then be instrument scientist while it is in Chile. This scientist will also train up CT observer support to handle starts for experienced users. This scientist support is a full time position for an astronomer, or most of a scientist, for the duration of NEWFIRM's presence at CTIO. 2009/02/23 Getting NEWFIRM to CTIO - TMCA - Tucson
