Our Advising Team We are soon-to-be 38 full-time advisors, 19 part-time faculty and lecturer advisors, and 10 administrative staff who support our work. You all know Julia Nichols, our Student Services Manager, who represents our department at these meetings, so I want to give her special recognition. We advise all incoming students and work with them for 4 years if they chose one of the 50+ majors in the College. We also advise professional school students once they transition to their professional school if they have 2nd majors or minors in the College of A&S.

Our Mission We partner with students to create meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their career and life goals. We support a diverse population of undergraduates through an ongoing developmental journey to graduation that empowers them to take responsibility for their education while becoming globally aware, ethical leaders. From orientation to graduation, we partner with students to support their educational goals. What does that mean? Our Organization Curriculum Generalists and Graduation Specialists Fine Arts and Humanities Social and Behavioral Sciences Natural Sciences and Mathematics Curriculum Generalists and Graduation Specialists We are part of the office of Undergraduate Education, which oversees the curriculum. We are comprised of 3 academic divisions that mirror the divisions in the College: Fine Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Science, Natural Sciences and Mathematics We are also comprised of curriculum generalists who will meet with any major. These curriculum generalists are located in Hardin Hub and Loudermilk Center, which I’ll talk about more in a minute. Our Graduation Specialists on the Graduation Division work with seniors to clear them for graduation. Students are assigned a primary advisor, but they may see anyone on the team.

One Department – Three Locations Steele Building Hardin Hub Loudermilk Center Steele Building is our primary location on main campus. Located next to South Building, near Cameron Ave., we reside on 3 floors – ground floor to 2nd floor. Most advisors and staff call Steele home base. Hardin Hub is located on south campus in the seminar wing of Hardin residence hall. 1 Assistant Dean, 1 support staff and 5 full time advisors (as of January 2016). Opened in fall 2014. 3 advisors are curriculum generalists and 2 advisors will work primarily with science and math majors. Hardin offers evening hours until 7:00 p.m. Loudermilk Center is located in the Kenan Stadium complex. A core team of 5 advisors from both Steele and Hardin provide a total of XX hours per week there, advising Student-Athletes. Loudermilk also offers evening hours for Student-Athletes.

How We Interact with Students Appointments (advising.unc.edu) In-person Phone Skype Drop-ins Steele, Monday-Friday, 11:00am-noon; 2:00-4:00pm Hardin, Monday-Thursday, 4:00-6:30pm; Friday, 2:00-4:00pm Online chat Monday-Friday, 4:00-5:00pm Major workshops Social media Website (advising.unc.edu) Online modules through Sakai Students can schedule appointments with advisors through the Advising website. During the academic year appointments are 30 minutes and can take the forms of meeting in person with an advisor, by phone or through Skype. Drop-ins are designed for quick questions. In Steele, students can see an advisor on a drop-in basis, M-F, 11:00- noon and 2:00-4:00. In Hardin, students can see an advisor on a drop-in basis M-R, 4:00-6:30 and Friday, 2:00-4:00. Online chat also offers the students the opportunity to ask a quick, general question of an advisor from any location. Chat is available to students M-F, 4:00-5:00. We offer group advising through our major workshops. We also connect with students via social media: twitter, Instagram, facebook. Our website contains a wealth of information. Online modules in Sakai are another tool for imparting important information pre-orientation for F-Y and TR students, as well as F-Y students in their first two semesters.
