THE CARIBBEAN Caribbean sea Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean South America Central America  N In the Caribbean, tourism and exploitation of fishing resources are important economic activities, in addition, it is an important route of commercial traffic. Around 33 states and territories share the same priorities regarding to marine resources management, and many of the same challenges towards data access and data management. Critical goods and services provided by the marine environment in the Caribbean are at risk because of threats as weak governance, mismanagement, climate change and inadequate incorporation of data in decision-making. Also, highly vulnerable of countries to impacts affecting marine and coastal resources (sea level rise, habitat degradation, overfishing and pollution).

CMA2 PROJECT BUILDS UPON… A collaborative approach with existing national, regional and international marine data and information management programs, projects or strategies: Experiences Strategic synergies Opportunities Collaborative approach with existing national, regional and international marine data and information management initiatives such as the CLME+, the International Oceanographic Data an Information Exchange (IODE) – Ocean Data and Information Network for the Caribbean and South America (ODINCARSA) initiative, the IODE National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs) in the participating countries, and the IODE Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), The International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centres (IAMSLIC) encompasses all aspects of aquatic and marine sciences and their allied disciplines. The association provides a forum to exchange and explore ideas and issues of mutual concern.

CMA2 COUNTRIES PILOT PARTNERS And CLME+ Project partners (25 countries endorsed at the Ministerial level)

OBJECTIVE Sustainable operationalization of an online digital “Caribbean Marine Atlas” technology platform in support of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and ecosystem-based management for CLME. With special attention to: coastal hazards, climate change, biodiversity & habitats, fisheries, land-based sources of pollution. SO1: To provide and operate an information discovery, Decision-Support (DS)/Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) mechanism for improved ICZM, in up to 7 pilot countries, based on [state-of-the-art technology for] the online publication, management and exchange of spatial data/information layers and ICZM best practices/tools. SO2: To contribute with the DS/M&E mechanisms at Caribbean Large Marine Ecosystem level through join efforts with CLME+. SO3: To enhance awareness, capacity and participation of key regional - and national-level stakeholders (both data users and data providers) in the development and use of the information discovery, DS and M&E mechanisms. SO4: To provide a mechanisms for seeking and acting on feedback to encourage both partners and stakeholders involvement with project milestone events, activities and results, based on the communication plan. Platform on implementation in selected countries (pilots) for regional and national level consultation and decision making. Training, awareness building and dissemination activities is conducted.

ATLAS – AVAILABLE INFORMATION RESOURCES Permanent and detailed reviewing allowed a collection to date of 298 maps, layers or documents. Each one include a metadata minimum based on ISO 19115 standard. Available on URL http://atlas.caribbeanmarineatlas.net/

ATLAS – USERS & TECHNICAL PLATFORM Allows manage profiles, roles and groups of users. Control access permissions and use of information GeoNode is a geospatial content management system for the management and publication of geospatial data. Is a consistent and easy-to-use interface allowing non-specialized users to share data and create interactive maps The platform allows to the countries manage their own content, let them self government over information, with a quality control and technical support from coordination group.
