New York City Antimicrobial Workshop Association for Professional Infection Control and Epidemiologist 2016 Annual Meeting Gloria Airall-Simon, PhD, MPHE, MSN, BSN New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response Bureau of Healthcare System Readiness Communicable Disease Preparedness Program October 28th, 2016 Good morning. Thank you for inviting us.

Antibiotic Stewardship Antibiotic Stewardship – What it is Antibiotic Stewardship Program is led by: Mary Foote, MD, MPH Senior Medical, Coordinator for Communicable Disease Preparedness Bureau of Healthcare Systems Readiness, Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response (OEPR) NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) 42-09 28th Street, 6th Floor, 6-115 Long Island City, NY 11101-4132 p: 347.396.2686 | c: 917.992.8241| f: 347.396.2751 Antibiotic/Antimicrobial Stewardship is a coordinated program that promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics), improves patient outcomes, reduces microbial resistance, and decreases the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials is one of the world’s most pressing public health problems. Infectious organisms adapt to the antimicrobials designed to kill them, making the drugs ineffective. People infected with antimicrobial-resistant organisms are more likely to have longer, more expensive hospital stays, and may be more likely to die as a result of an infection.  2

Antibiotic Stewardship Project Team Members Pamela Kellner, MPH, RN, Consultant Christian Oriuwa, MBBS, MSc., Coordinator Gloria Airall-Simon, PhD, RN, Senior Nurse Educator 3
