Timeline – pages 884 - 887 Create a timeline showing major events that occurred during the Watergate Crisis June,1972 May, 1973 October, 1973 August, 1974

Cause/Effect - pages 884 - 887 Cause Effect Police arrest burglars who broke into the Watergate complex. Few people pay much attention to the event. The Washington Post charges that the Watergate burglars worked for the Nixon campaign. Nixon refuses, claiming executive privilege. (principle that White House conversations should remain private) Nixon hands over the tapes. A House committee votes to impeach Nixon (officially charge someone with misconduct in office). New evidence surfaces that Nixon was involved in covering up the Watergate scandal.

Impeachment House brings charges Senate holds hearing to decide president’s guilt or innocence

Nixon Resigns Proved system of checks and balances worked. Legislative and judicial branches used their power to check the abuses of the executive branch.
