Understanding and Implementing LLI Presented by Patrice Brake and Hayley Sample Hayley and Patrice introductions

Between Us - Let’s Connect! At your table, decide on “how many of something” you have between all of you,and be ready to share out with the group. Examples: 1,652 pictures on our phones 32 pairs of boots 12 kids Patrice

What is LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention is a powerful, short-term intervention, that provides daily, intensive, small-group instruction, which supplements classroom literacy teaching. LLI turns struggling readers into successful readers with engaging leveled books and fast- paced, systematically designed lessons. Have participants read silently, then popcorn out the KEY words that stuck out to them.

SPED Departments have the Blue System: Levels C (3-4) through N (30) Kindergarten - Beginning 3rd grade Hayley shares what happens at 7 Hills. There may be other kits of different colors on your campus: Orange, Green, Gold, Red

How will it benefit my students? The goal of LLI is to lift the literacy achievement of students who are not achieving grade-level expectations in reading. The LLI systems are designed to: Advance the literacy learning of students not meeting grade-level expectations in reading Deepen and expand comprehension with close reading Elevate the expertise of teachers Increase reading volume by engaging students in large amounts of successful daily reading Increase student engagement with books that build knowledge Intervene with small groups of struggling readers to maximize growth Meet the needs of struggling readers Monitor student progress. Patrice Now, with a partner at your table, read through the bullets and together pick one or two words from each bullet that highlights the “benefits”.

Understanding LLI: The Essential Elements -Rereading -Phonics -Reading a new book with several levels of support -Writing about reading -Letter/Word Work Patrice

Getting Organized for Efficient Teaching See pgs. Vii - xi for materials needed to get reading for level Blue lessons.`There is a CD that came with each kit. Resources can also be accessed by downloading them on the Fountas and Pinnell website. *Being organized and ready for each group is essential to success with students. Patrice

Odd vs. Even Lessons -Odd lessons are based on the group’s INSTRUCTIONAL TEXT LEVEL. -Even lessons are based on a rereading of the previous day’s book, as well as introducing an INDEPENDENT level book for students to practice fluency and comprehension (usually one to two levels below the instructional level text from the previous day’s ODD lesson). Hayley

Odd Numbered Lessons 5 minutes Rereading Books 5 minutes Phonics/Word Work 15 minutes New book (instructional level) 5 minutes Letter/Word Work Hayley

Even Lessons • 5 minutes Rereading Books and Assessment •5 minutes Phonics/ Word Work •15 minutes Writing About Reading •5 minutes New book (independent level) •If time allows Optional Letter/Word Work Hayley

Let’s Take a Look at the Lesson Lesson Walk-Through of an Odd and Even Lesson Blue- Lesson 59- Level H Blue- Lesson 60- Level F Hayley walks teachers thru the lessons.

Mad Minute(s) Find your SHOE TWIN and summarize your take-aways so far from the odd and/or even lesson plans. One minute per twin!

Video Demo Lesson View Video Clip of a Lesson from DVD included in the kit -Make notes about what the teacher is doing, and what the students are doing. -Be ready to share out and ask questions. Hayley Share rereading books and new book clip from dvd

Any questions or clarifications? Demo Debrief At your table, share out your noticings about what the teacher was doing, and what the students were doing. Any questions or clarifications? Hayley and Patrice

Word Work If students don’t need the word work that is in the lesson plan, use the “Continuum of Literacy Learning” Word Work ideas for each level, to choose word work that is tied to the text, and also what the students need. Hand out copies of this resource. Patrice

Running Records Where do I access them? When do I take them? Online Resources Choose Kit Color Lesson Resources Click Lesson Number/Book Title along left hand side (Running Records will be with the Odd Number Text that comes after the even text number read in the resources) When do I take them? On the EVEN day, at the beginning of the lesson (place this where it fits best for you) Take it on the previous day’s INSTRUCTIONAL level text, as a reread. - Hayley

Running Records Course on Moodle Online Running Records Course: -Moodle -Staff -Professional Development -Early Literacy -Enrollment key: reader2016 “Introduction to Running Records” Segment 1: Taking a Running Record Segment 2: Scoring a Running Record Segment 3: Analyzing a Running Record Patrice Strongly suggest participants take the time to do this training. It takes about an hour or so, but is self-paced based on your needs.

A great resource that comes in every LLI kit. Reference this for more information on lesson components, or how to move students forward with explicit, targeted instruction. Patrice

Online Resource Register your LLI kit on this website with your kit’s code: http://resources.fountasandpinnell.com/ •Input your email & choose a password •You will be prompted to input the following codes one at a time. You will then be able to access lesson materials on line . Orange: FPLLI72472 Green: FPLLI72683 Blue: FPLLI72929 Gold: FPLLI72445 Red: FPLLI72366 *Let’s get it downloaded on your computer right now!
