Presentation transcript:

What is the vision of the type of counselor you want to be? What role will you play in the system? How do you plan on effecting change? What model will you use?

Traditional role of counselors Counseling paradigms that emphasized changing the individual primarily through individually focused interventions

Professional Counselor’s Roles Human Development Specialist Individual and systemic-ecological change agent To maximize counseling effectiveness counselors need to recognize that the environment surrounding the client is as much of the “client” as the individual

Community Counseling model A four quadrant model that addresses individual and systemic-ecological change in problem conceptualization and intervention

Five assumptions People’s environment either nurture or limit their development A multifaceted approach is most effective Prevention is more efficient than remediation Effective intervention must be sensitive and respectful of the multidimensional nature of human development The C.C. model can be adapted to all settings

Direct and Indirect Services Direct services: provide opportunities to develop new skills and understanding (target population) Indirect services: address the settings that effect people’s well-being (environment)

Four quadrants Direct client: Services that involve working with the student/client directly –counseling/guidance Indirect client: Indirect services for the client Consultation/advocacy collaboration (with family/teacher) Direct Community: Services that involve working with the larger community Parent education, preventive education Indirect community: Services that indirectly effect the community- public policy, legislation

Client service Direct client-programs that provide direct assistance to clients such as guidance/counseling, outreach Indirect client- Programs that intervene in the environment of specific individuals or groups such as advocacy, consultation, collaboration, self help groups

Community service Direct community-Community wide programs that provide direct experiences and are available to the population as a whole ( preventive education, classes in life planning, relaxation training, parenting, health promotions) Indirect community-efforts to make the social environment more responsive to the needs of the population as a whole such as promoting systemic change and influencing pubic policy
