Israel: Arab and Jew Response Why was it necessary? How did the Arabs respond?

Jews on Israel To both Jews and many non Jews, Hitler’s murder of 6 million European Jews showed the need for a homeland where Jews could live safely. After WWII, Jews fled Germany as refugees to Palestine. Most were survivors of Hitler’s concentration camps. Together with earlier settlers of the area, they were determined to set up a Jewish state.

Arab Response They revolted and tried to force the Jews out of the Middle East. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon sent separate military forces against Israel. The war against Israel divided the Arab nations, and even though Israelis had great casualties, they not only defended their land, but gained more territory.

The Ever Changing Israel

Israel in 1947 Israel was initially split into an Arab state and a Jewish state. Does it look like they were split evenly?

Israel after the 1948 war. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon united against Israel in 1948. Despite heavy losses, Israel defended itself and defeated its enemies. It annexed half of the area set aside for an Arab state under the UN partition plan as well as half of Jerusalem.

War of 1967 (The Six Day War) Israeli forces took the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt. They gained the Golan Heights from Syria. They controlled the West Bank from Jordan.

Occupied Territories

The Intifada in 1987 Palestinians were frustrated with years of Israeli military rule. They attacked soldiers and civilians and also organized strikes against Israeli businesses. Israelis responded by arresting and imprisoning the Palestinians who revolted.

Israeli Reluctance To Give Up The Occupied Territories They feel that if they give up their land, Arab countries will continue to fight anyway. Regardless of how much land the Israelis give back, the Arabs will always want more land. They will not be satisfied until they have their land back.
