Introduction to New Jersey NAEP Webinar for New Jersey Administrators and School Coordinators Friday, October 14, 2016 Tabitha McKinley, PhD New Jersey NAEP State Coordinator

What is NAEP? National Assessment of Educational Progress Began in 1969 Administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) State NAEP every odd year (10-20,000 NJ students assessed total) National NAEP even year (approximately 3,000 students assessed in NJ)

How is NAEP Unlike State-Based Assessment Programs? State Assessments Low Stakes Students, schools and districts do not get results Not all students can/must take Not diagnostic High stakes Students, schools and districts will get results All students take Diagnostic

How Schools are Selected for NAEP? Schools are selected by stratified-random sampling through the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) An accurate picture of student performance is obtained by administering NAEP to a sample of students who represent the student population of the nation as a whole and of individual states NAEP is given in a sample of New Jersey schools whose students reflect the varying demographics of our state

7 Steps of NAEP Sampling Identify all potential schools in the state of New Jersey Classify schools into groups (by student demographics). Within each group, order schools by student achievement. Develop an ordered list for sampling. Select the school sample. Confirm school eligibility.  Within sampled schools, select students to participate in NAEP.

Where are NAEP Results? http://www.nationsreportcard.gov/ Explore: State Comparisons Comparisons by subgroups/demographics Contextual variable comparisons Sample items Long term trends Trial Urban District results View informational videos for teachers, parents and students
