Mrs. Mundrick’s 6th Grade Math Class Fun with Formulas

Geometry – Area of a Rectangle Multiply Base (b) x Height (h) to get the Area of any square or rectangle. b x h b=1 b=2 b=3 h=1 Total Area (bh) is 3 units wide x 1 unit high which = 3 square units and we have 3 squares in this rectangle. 1 x 1 = 1 square unit 1 x 2 = 2 square units 1 x 3 = 3 square units

Geometry – Rectangle Area Multiply b x h to get the Area of any square or rectangle. b x h b=1 b=2 b=3 h = 1 h = 2 Total Area (bh) is 3 x 2 = 6 square units and we have 6 squares in this rectangle. 1 x 1 = 1 square unit 2 x 1 = 2 square units 3 x 1 = 3 1 x 2 = 2 2 x 2 = 4 square units 3 x 2 = 6

Find the Area (A) of a Rectangle Given: A = bh b x h b=1 b=2 b=3 h = 1 h = 2 h = 3 Using the formulas above, Find the Area of each of the small rectangles. ? square units

Perimeter (P) of a Rectangle Given: P = 2b + 2h = 2bh = 2A b x h b=1 b=2 b=3 h = 1 h = 2 h = 3 h = 4 Total Area = bh square units and we have bh squares inside of the largest rectangle. Total Perimeter = 2bh units. P = 2 x 1 x 1 = 2 P = 2 x 2 x 1 = 4 p = 2 x 3 x 1 = 6 P = 2 x 1 x 2 = 4 p = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 p = 2 X 3 X 2 = 12 p = 2 X 1 X 3 = 6 p = 2 X 2 X 3 = 12 p = 2 X 3 X 3 = 18 p = 2 X 1 X 4 = 8 p = 2 X 2 X 4 = 16 p = 2 X 3 X 4 = 24

Geometry – Area & Perimeter Find the Area & the Perimeter of the Largest & of the Smallest Rectangles below: h x b b=1 b=2 h= 1 h = 2 h = 3 h = 4 h = 5 A = ? sq. units, P = ?

Circle Definitions Pi, denoted π, is a special number that is a non-repeating decimal with no end. (π ≈ 3.1415…). Use 3.1415 in place of Pi. Radius, R, is half of the distance across the widest part of a circle. Dimension, D, is the distance across the widest part of a circle. Circumference, C, is the length around a circle.

Area & Circumference of a Circle Given: A = π x R², C = 2 x π x R R = ½ x D Find the Area and the Circumference (hint: 1st find the Radius, R) Write ALL answers on a piece of paper with your name on it and turn it in for Extra Credit! D = 6
