How to draw in 1 Point Linear perspective An Artist’s Tool for showing Space and Form Lesson 1: 3-D boxes Lesson 2: 3-D Block letters Lesson 3: Dream House Lesson 4: Inside the house

How to draw in 1 point perspective You will need a Ruler #2 Pencil Eraser 8x11 paper computer

Where is the vanishing point? The horizon line? Orthogonal?

To draw a solid object in 3-D You must know the Vanishing point Horizon line Orthogonal (diagonal lines to the VP)

Draw the horizon line with a ruler near the middle of your paper.

Put the vanishing point (a small dot) on the horizon line.

Draw a box below the horizon line using your ruler.

Using your ruler, draw lines connecting the corners of the box to the vanishing point.

Using your ruler, draw a line between the orthogonal lines that is parallel to the front of the box.

Erase the orthogonal lines that are between the back of the box and the vanishing point.

This is a box sitting on the ground in front of you This is a box sitting on the ground in front of you. You can see over the top of it.

Draw another box that is taller and crosses the horizon line.

Using your ruler, draw lines connecting the corners of the box to the vanishing point.

Using your ruler, draw a line between the orthogonal lines that is parallel to the side of the box.

Erase the orthogonal lines that are between the back of the box and the vanishing point.

This box is sitting on the ground but you cannot see the top of it.

Draw a box above the horizon line in the right corner of your paper.

Using your ruler, draw lines connecting the corners of the box to the vanishing point.

Using your ruler, draw a line between the orthogonal lines that are parallel to the side and front of the box.

Erase the orthogonal lines that are between the back of the box and the vanishing point.

This box is floating in the sky. If you like, add legs to hold it up.

Assignment 1: Using your ruler, draw 6 boxes in 1 point perspective around the vanishing point and horizon line. This is an example. Your paper will look different.

Assignment 2: Draw your initials in 6 inch block style letters and then use the steps to turn them into a 1 point perspective drawing. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

Assignment 2: 3-D letters Using a ruler: 1 Assignment 2: 3-D letters Using a ruler: 1. Draw the horizon line and vanishing point 2. Draw the 6 inch block letters.

3. Using a ruler, draw the orthogonal lines to the vanishing point. 4 3. Using a ruler, draw the orthogonal lines to the vanishing point. 4. Draw the parallel lines in between the orthogonal lines 5. Erase the extra lines

Assignment 3: Draw a 1 point perspective Dream house on paper or in Paint on the computer.

You must have windows and doors drawn in perspective You must have windows and doors drawn in perspective. Most lines are horizontal, vertical or to the VP. Windows and doors on the side of the house have lines to the vanishing point.

Windows and doors on the FRONT of the house have Parallel Lines You must have windows and doors drawn in perspective. Most lines are horizontal, vertical or to the VP. Windows and doors on the FRONT of the house have Parallel Lines

Finish the drawing by adding details. What kind of house is it Finish the drawing by adding details. What kind of house is it? A mansion, a ranch, a 2 story, in the country or city? In the mountains or near a river? Does it have a garage? A swimming pool? A balcony?

Assignment 4: Draw a 1 point perspective room on paper or in Paint on the computer.

Assignment 4: The blue box is the back wall Assignment 4: The blue box is the back wall. The green lines create the other walls, floor and ceiling.

Assignment 4: Everything on the walls, floor and ceiling will have lines to the vanishing point.

Assignment 4: This is the beginning of a great room Assignment 4: This is the beginning of a great room! Add details and furniture!
