Art is communication. Art is a language that artists use to communicate or express ideas and/or feelings. When we look at art, we have to learn to perceive (use the senses to become more deeply aware of the nature of visual objects).

Things you need to know about art: An art medium is the material that an artist uses to create an artwork (paint, pencil, pastel, clay, etc). Subject Matter would be the things that are represented in an artwork such as trees, buildings and people. Poverty by Kathe Kollwitz

Things you need to know about art: A COMPOSITION is created when an artist organizes the elements of an artwork into a harmoniously unified whole. There are many ways to set up a composition, which is done by the placement of objects on the artwork itself. The artist wants to use the space in an interesting manner.

ART ELEMENTS These are the building blocks that artists work with to create an artwork. They are LINE, SHAPE, FORM, VALUE, TEXTURE, COLOR, and SPACE.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES These are the effects that may result when the art elements are structured to achieve a successful composition. They are UNITY, RHYTHM/MOVEMENT, EMPHASIS/FOCAL POINT, PATTERN, SCALE/PROPORTION, VARIETY, and BALANCE.

Today’s Activity Your 1st art project is to create a portfolio to use in this class to store your artwork. It must have your first and last name along with the class period. It must be DESIGNED and not just random. You will have the rest of the class period today to finish your portfolio so take your time!

You will keep this portfolio in the storage cabinet to store your artwork for this class.
