Welcome, reflection, prayer HOPE & ASPIRATION May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope ( Romans 15.13) For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope ( Jeremiah 29.11)

A prayer of hope God of hope, We look to you to inspire and empower us As we teach and learn how to face the future As we repent, forgive and reconcile. Grant us the strength we need to embody hope in our schools, filling our reservoirs with your living water May bad experiences and behaviour never have the last word And may you continually help us to see our future through your eyes Amen

Bringing the Vision Alive The new C of E vision for education Brief reminder of the Vision and its 4 core elements A focus on one of those elements – Hope and Aspiration – through the lens Input – Dvd Ndidi Okezie Reflection, response, audit – your school Pupil & staff focus – ethos enhancing outcomes disadvantaged pupils and wellbeing Support, initiatives Invitation – sharing good practice

The Vision – a quick recap See Executive Summary Published July 2016 ‘Deeply Christian, Serving the Common Good’ A fresh articulation of the Church’s vision for education which seeks to renew our confidence at a time of complexity Theological, pedagogical It has ‘life in all its fullness’ at its heart A vision of human flourishing for all which both embraces academic rigour but sets them in a wider framework Spiritual, physical, intellectual, moral, social

4 core areas Educating for wisdom, knowledge and skills Educating for hope and aspiration Educating for community and living well together Educating for dignity and respect

Ndidi Okezie Executive Director at Teach First

Educating for hope and aspiration ‘Good schools open up horizons of hope and aspiration, and guide pupils into ways of fulfilling them.’ ‘They also cope wisely when things go wrong; bad experiences and bad behaviour’. ‘There are resources for healing, repair, renewal, forgiveness, reconciliation…’

Theological and pedagogical underpinning The worth of each child impels us to work to fulfil their God-given potential Special consideration to those who are disadvantaged Each is to be encouraged to stretch themselves intellectually, morally, spiritually and to aspire to be well educated Not just about one’s own fulfillment but seeing how this is linked to the flourishing of families and communities Hope in God’s future and the kind of society and world we are seeking to create Jesus and his life and ministry offers hope to all

Pause for reflection What questions might we consider in relation to hope and aspiration ? Reflect on some of the questions given and think how your school already responds and what else you might seek to do Reflect on the Christian values for schools questions and theological underpinning Ethos, leadership, curriculum, worship FEEDBACK

Exemplar approaches Asking leadership, pedagogical and theological questions in relation to ‘Well being’ and ‘Removing disadvantage’

Initiatives and support Well being package of support Headteacher retreat Emotional and mental health support COMPASS for LIFE project ( funded ) Foundation for educational leadership opportunities Sharing of good practice and case studies
