The Project “Poetry of Moscow University: from Lomonosov till…” About the project The report is devoted to the project «Poetry of Moscow University: since Lomonosov till…», which is developing in Research Computing Center of Moscow State University. The project has its own website, and a series of poetry books is publishing. http://poesis.ru

History of the Project: Galina Voropaeva (1947 – 2008) The project proponent became Galina Voropaeva. She was able to impress everyone by a bold idea to bring together poems and biographies of all the poets, who were connected with Moscow University since beginning till nowadays. The aim of the project “Poetry of Moscow University…” or, maybe, of the first part of the work, was declared as “to look at the history of Moscow University through the prism of poetry” and to consider Russian poetry in relation to Moscow University.

History of the Project: Galina Voropaeva (1947 – 2008) Voropaeva did a lot: the project site was created under her direction; she herself prepared a list of 663 poets, who studied or taught at Moscow University, and for 584 of them personal pages were done. She also compiled four poetry books, since Lomonosov (18th century) till the middle of 19th century, in chronological order. The project became very popular soon, and it attracted a lot of voluntary helpers, who searched for new poets and little known poems, provided rare books and some archive documents, helped with the site and so on. Modern poets, friends of Voropaeva, were giving their verses to site and writing memoires about the University. Galina Voropaeva wrote poetry since early youth and has published 5 books of poems. Besides, she graduated from the physical faculty of the university; so, she herself was one of the poets of Moscow University, and she has her own page at the site, which became her last deed.

History of the Project: Natalia Pertsova (1945 – 2015) After the death of Voropaeva the project stopped for a year. In 2009 the project was transferred to the Laboratory for Computational Lexicography at the Research Computer Center. Its second leader became Natalia Pertsova, linguist, literary scholar, preeminent Khlebnikov scholar. With her guidance the archival work was activated and a lot of unknown documents and manuscripts were published for the first time.

History of the Project: Natalia Pertsova (1945 – 2015) Voropaeva included the authors, who studied or taught in Moscow University or the Gently Pension at the University. Pertsova suggested to add the members of the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature, who ever wrote verses. It gave the project a lot of new “university poets”, some names are well-known, while the others are forgotten. Being linguist and scholar, Pertsova understood the importance of publishing verses in their authentic form. Besides, the group under her leading found a lot of unknown archive documents. Thus, the project became interesting not only for poetry lovers, but for scholars too. 4 books of poetry were prepared under the leading of Pertsova. Books 5 and 6 continued chronological order, and Books 7 and 8 contained new archive data and involved a lot of forgotten poets. Both archive books were published in 2016, after the death of Pertsova.

The Project Now Now the project’s site contains the list of 810 poets and for 661 of them author pages are posted. The criteria of being “University poet” is partly formal: we include the authors, who studied or worked at the University, the ones, who graduated from the Gently Pension, members of the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature at the University and last but not least the University founders.

“Our” poets: Empress Elizabeth of Russia, the Founder (1709 -1761) Elizabeth decreed the establishment of the University on January 25, 1755, the day of St. Tatiana. This day, January 25, is still celebrating in Russia as Student day. Later Elizabeth continued to patronize the University. Elizabeth herself was not well-educated. She has been taught for marriage, not for reign, so she studied languages, dances and manners. Her courtiers knew very well, that they should never talk her about sciences and dead men in private. After the death of her parents princess Elizabeth was out of favor. She lived in her village Pokrovskoye and wrote songs and poems.

“Our” poets: Anton Prokopovich-Antonsky, Professor, Rector, 1st Chairman of the SLRL (1783 – 1852) Antonsky was writer, linguist, mathematician and scientist. As chairman of the Society he paid great attention to linguistic studies: for example, he suggested the projects of pronunciation and derivative dictionaries. The meetings of the Society were open to all comers; during these meetings, the literary and scholar works of its members and some guests were read and discussed. The Society published its own reports.

“Our” poets: Anton Prokopovich-Antonsky, Professor, Rector, 1st Chairman of the SLRL (1783 – 1852) Antonsky wrote poetry since early youth, but preferred not to show or discuss his verses, so only a few his poems remained. Three of them, the riddles, are posted at the site and published in Book 7 of our poetry series. Anton Prokopovich-Antonsky wrote about his life and works at his late years: “Not rising, without a twinge of conscience can I say… that I have trained many experts in the Russian language. Zhukovsky is my pupil. <…> As Chairman of the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature I have made a lot of people willing to become Russian writers.”

“Our” poets: Vasily Zhukovsky (1783–1852), Fellow Member of the SLRL Zhukovsky wrote a lot of poems and translations and is known as one of the founders of Russian Romanticism. He was the elder friend of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. The portrait at this slide was presented by Zhukovsky to A. Pushkin over the inscription: "To the victorious disciple from his vanquished tutor"

“Our” poets: Leo Tolstoy, (1828-1910), Great Russian Novelist, the Member of SLRL Tolstoy is known as novelist and thinker, not poet, but he started with writing poems. Two of his verses became folksongs. At his late ages Tolstoy spoke of verses and poetry in a very ironic manner, saying that “writing verses is like plowing a field and dancing at the same time. This is really disrespect for the word”. However, he continued to write poems, there are known four so-called “tales in verses” (poems, based on Russian epic ballades, bylines) for his popular education book series.

“Our” poets: Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) “Our” poets: Boris Pasternak (1890-1960). Studied at Faculty of Law, graduated from Philosophy Faculty Pasternak graduated from the University in 1913, but did not take his diploma. His diploma No. 20974 is still holding in the university archive. Pasternak worked as tutor and clerk, but his main occupation has always been literature. He wrote and published many poetry books, and he translated a lot: his translations of Shakespeare, Goethe's “Faust” and Georgian poetry are known very well in Russian literature. In 1957 Pasternak’s novel “Doctor Zhivago” was published in Italy. This publication brought him Nobel Prize for Literature but caused a terrible slander campaign in USSR.

Problems and Perspectives First, the project site needs reconstruction: it was created in early 2000s and now is obsolete; for example, the English version is necessary. We continue the work on the project: search for new poets and data, post the articles, photos and verses and so on. But now it is not enough, and the time became to study “our” authors as the whole. Our site can be treated as partial corpus of Russian poetry, and corpus studies could be carried out.

What would be the focal point of the study? A lot of “University poets” were scholars or scientists. So, we can suppose, that their cognitive image of the world differed from the usual poetic image of the world at the same time.

Ideas: how to study the image of the world of University poets Chosen poets. Some authors, for example Lomonosov, wrote about scientific or humanitarian knowledge in their verses. The others, for example F. Korsh, had explicitly described the usage of poetic translation in education. Statistics. Some concepts: science, study, university, scholarship, translation and so on.

Conclusion “Minor writers prepare the field for writers of first-class, for great writers, who could never have come, if preceding literary figures did not have prepared materials for the expression of creativity, the environment, in which great talent may already be demonstrated” – wrote K. Aksakov, the famous Russian writer of the 19th century, member of Society of Lovers of Russian Literature and other literary associations. Moscow University and its literary and scholar societies have been and still remain such a “field” or “environment” for Russian literature and culture as a whole.
