Second Messianic Prophecy Called by God Genesis 12 Father Abram Abram’s God and Mine Second Messianic Prophecy The Gift of Faith 1

Called by God Genesis 12 Father Abram There is no good in Abram! Genesis 6:5; Romans 3:10-12 2

Romans 3:10-12 (NASB) 10 as it is written, “There is none righteous, not even one; 11  There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; 12  All have turned aside, together they have become useless; There is none who does good, There is not even one.”

Called by God Genesis 12 Father Abram There is no good in Abram! Genesis 6:5; Romans 3:10-12 Abram most likely was an idol worshipper – Joshua 24:2-3, 14; Isaiah 51:1-2; Genesis 31. 3

Joshua 24:2-3, 14 (NASB) 2  Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘From ancient times your fathers lived beyond the River, namely, Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, and they served other gods. 3  Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him through all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac.  14 “Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

Isaiah 51:1-2 (NASB) 1  “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, Who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were hewn And to the quarry from which you were dug. 2  “Look to Abraham your father And to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain; When he was but one I called him, Then I blessed him and multiplied him.”

Called by God Genesis 12 Father Abram There is no good in Abram! Genesis 6:5; Romans 3:10-12 Abram most likely was an idol worshipper – Joshua 24:2-3, 14; Isaiah 51:1-2; Genesis 31. Abram is the link from the idolatry of Genesis 11 to justification by grace alone in Genesis 12. 4

Called by God Genesis 12 Father Abram God’s call on Abram This is a decisive separation from Abram’s past. Abram is to leave his country. Abram is to leave his people. Abram is to leave his family. This call came on at least two occasions – Acts 7:2-4. 5

Acts 7:2-4 (NASB) 2  And he said, “Hear me, brethren and fathers! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3  and said to him, ‘Leave your country and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’ 4  Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. From there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living.

Called by God Genesis 12 Father Abram God’s call on Abram This is a decisive separation from Abram’s past. Abram is to leave his country. Abram is to leave his people. Abram is to leave his family. This call came on at least two occasions – Acts 7:2-4. Though Abram began in obedience he faltered, and God had to redirect him. 6

Called by God Genesis 12 Abram’s God and Mine They said/God said! Genesis 11:3 – They said Genesis 12:1 – The Lord said Genesis 11:2 – They found a plain Genesis 12:1 – land I (the Lord) will show you Genesis 11:3-4 – let us build ourselves a city Genesis 12:2-3 – I (the Lord) will, I will … 7

Called by God Genesis 12 Abram’s God and Mine Satan’s “I wills” – Isaiah 14:13-14 8

Isaiah 14:13-14 (NASB) 13  “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. 14  ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ ”

Called by God Genesis 12 Abram’s God and Mine Satan’s “I wills” – Isaiah 14:13-14 God’s “I wills” – Genesis 12:1-3 9

Genesis 12:1-3 (NASB) 1  Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; 2  And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And (I will) make your name great; And (I will make) (so) you (shall be) a blessing; 3  And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Called by God Genesis 12 Abram’s God and Mine Satan’s “I wills” – Isaiah 14:13-14 God’s “I wills” – Genesis 12:1-3 God’s promises here are unconditional and have taken place and will take place! The blessing of Abraham is the blessing of redemption through Jesus – Galatians 3:14. 10

Galatians 3:14 (NASB) 14  in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Second Messianic Prophecy Called by God Genesis 12 Second Messianic Prophecy Genesis 12:3 and 15:6 tell us of the Gospel in advance for a second time – Galatians 3:6-9. 11

Galatians 3:6-9 (NASB) 6  Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 7  Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. 8  The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” 9  So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.

Second Messianic Prophecy Called by God Genesis 12 Second Messianic Prophecy Genesis 12:3 and 15:6 tell us of the Gospel in advance for a second time – Galatians 3:6-9. This is explained in the word redemption – Galatians 3:13-14. 12

Galatians 3:13-14 (NASB) 13  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— 14  in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Second Messianic Prophecy Called by God Genesis 12 Second Messianic Prophecy Genesis 12:3 and 15:6 tell us of the Gospel in advance for a second time – Galatians 3:6-9. This is explained in the word redemption – Galatians 3:13-14. go’el – kinsman-redeemer kopher – price of redemption on mercy seat lutron – deliver by a price, loose, free exagorazo – to buy out of the marketplace for a price, as in slaves Summed up in Galatians 3:16 13

Galatians 3:16 (NASB) 16  Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.

Called by God Genesis 12 The Gift of Faith This thing called faith. Faith is a natural thing. There was the natural sequence of need, promise, and faith on Adam’s part in Genesis 3:15 and now in Abram. Faith is also an unnatural thing. God’s promises seem so unreasonable sometimes because they are far beyond our reach or comprehension as humans. Faith is always connected to obedience. 14

Called by God Genesis 12 The Gift of Faith Steps of Abram’s faith in Hebrews 11:8-17 Abram obeyed! Abraham lived (made his home in a foreign land)! Abraham trusted in the impossible, the miraculous! Abraham was willing to sacrifice it all! 15

At what stage of growth is your faith? Called by God Genesis 12 Application Is your faith based on a proper understanding of the call of God in your life? At what stage of growth is your faith? Are you obeying Him? Are you living in Him? Are you trusting even in the unreasonable? Are you sacrificing all for the kingdom? 16
