I. Background Nation’s Competitiveness depends on Competitiveness in R&D Competitive Power of Universities, Libraries & Information Centers ※ SCI World Ranking in 2003 : 14 (2002) ⇒ 14(2003 / 17,785 articles) Need to Share resources that Universities hold Differences in research capabilities among universities Gaps in information availability among universities and libraries

I. Background – Cont. Provide various web-based research information services for researchers, professors, students, and other academic user groups Develop a centralized information retrieval system embracing information on books, journal articles, dissertations, and overseas research information service Provide ILL(Inter-Library Loan) Service Cooperative efforts to facilitate resource sharing among libraries (shared cataloging)

II. Chronology Dec.1996: Korea Research Information Center established May. 1998: RISS (Research Information Service System) was launched and Cooperative Cataloging Service began with 7 Lib members university libraries. Jan. 1999: KMEC & KRIC were consolidated into KERIS by “Korea Education & Research Information Service Act” Mar. 2001: KERIS was assigned as ‘National Education and Research Information Center’ by the Ministry of Information and Communication

Nov. 2002: Sharing bibliographic data of NII (National Institute for Informatics, Japan) and KERIS Jan. 2003: Sharing bibliographic data of National Library of Korea – Union Catalog of 384 public libraries and KERIS Jun. 2003: Partnership with Korea Medical Library Association to build Medical Library Information System (MEDLIS) Nov. 2003: Membership extended to all 4-year universities in Korea (Total of 200 universities)
