12/13/16: BR – What is the difference between public and private policy? Today: What is the power of public policy? Who has power to influence, make, and change public policy? How will you participate in creating and changing public policy.

Notice: You must clear out your locker! All students must clean out their lockers by this Friday December 16. Students are to clean out lockers before or after school and not during lunch or class. Anything left in lockers after this Friday will be thrown out! New locker assignments will be made the week of 12/19 and unused lockers will be secured.

Vocabulary Journal - Policy – an approach to solving problems using laws, rules, regulations, and actions Public policy – laws, rules, regulations, and actions that are taken by the government Private policy - laws, rules, regulations, and actions that are made by businesses or other private institutions (families, individuals, e.g.)

Mind Map Teen Drivers Chicago police Dept. IL General Assembly Parents City of Chicago Snow Removal IL Secretary of State School Administration

Public Policy Affects YOU! Pick up the “Mind Walk” handout. Complete the activity for each phase of your day. we are trying to examine a variety of policies and activities You may use the back! Don’t worry if you are not sure about who affects each activity When you finish – create a mind map (like the one for teen drivers) that put you at the center and lists all of the government agencies that affect you. This should be done on a separate piece of paper.

Today We need to.. Go over assessment quickly Finish mind walk and mind map (from yesterday) Look at essential questions for the unit Complete closure Do extra credit tie-in

Extra Credit Tie-In Compare your extra credit with someone else. Describe how their writing connects with some sort of policy? Who makes this policy? Do you agree or disagree with the author’s position? Should their be a different policy regarding the author’s issue?

Finished so soon? How about some extra credit.. -Think about all the rules and regulations that affect your life. “You must go here! Don’t go there! Brush your teeth! Wear this! Say this! Don’t say that! Stop picking at it! You’ll make it worse!” -In a brief (no more than 2 pages!) written response explain the rule or regulation that you hate the most. Why does it bother you so much? Why does it exist? Explain how your life would be better if this rule or regulation did not exist. -One thing to think about.. -not all rules or regulations are written down. Some are societal rules that are unofficially enforced. For example, there’s no law against cheating on your boyfriend..

Unit 3 Essential Questions What is the power of public policy? Who has power to influence, make, and change public policy? How will you participate in creating and changing public policy.

Closure – this should be done on your Mind Map (the one you made for you!) What is the connection between the Unit 3 Essential Questions and the Mind Walk and Mind Map Activities?
