Explaining how modern it has had an impact on working practices Outcome 1.4 Explaining how modern it has had an impact on working practices

Learning intentions To discuss the different types of working contracts that exist. To define the information that should be included within a contract of employment.

Success criteria I can: Define what is included within a contract of employment. Identify examples of contracts that exist.

Starter activity What are the disadvantages of home-working or tele-working to the employee?

QUESTION 3 Outline the benefits of a career break to: (4 marks)

Hints & Tips Outline “Identify key features and provide a brief description where appropriate” 4 marks – one mark awarded for any consequence outlined – a brief statement which may include facts, features or characteristics. Four benefits must be given. Two for organisation and two for employee.

CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT Today, employees are faced with a variety of different working contracts. It is now very unusual to find an employee serving 25 years or more in a single organisation, as full-time, permanent contracts are increasingly rare. Nowadays no job is ‘for life’ instead there are: Part-time contracts – can be permanent or temporary Full-time contracts – can be permanent or temporary

CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT Temporary contracts – for an indefinite period of time Outsourcing – work is contracted out either to gain services more cheaply and cost-effectively, (for example cleaning, decorating, and catering) or for specialised services (for example, payroll or call centre). Employers use the flexibility of contracts to cover periods of boom, slump and holidays in most efficent and effective way.

Zero-hour contracts Zero hours contracts normally mean there is no obligation for employers to offer work, or for workers to accept it. Zero hours workers have the same employment rights as regular workers, although they may have breaks in their contracts, which affect rights that accrue over time. Who might find a Zero-hour contract meets their needs?

TASK Working with your partner and using the internet for help research the following questions: How many people are currently working on Zero-hour contracts in the UK? Identify two companies who currently use Zero-hour contracts? Identify someone might find a Zero-hour meets their needs? State one right a Zero-hour contract worker is entitled to?

THE CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT This is the legally enforceable agreement between the employer and the employee. Under the Employment Rights Act of 1966 an organisation is required by law to give an employee a written statement of the main terms and conditions of employment within 8 weeks of starting employment.

THE CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT This statement must include the following terms: The job title Working hours Required duties Wage/salary details Holiday details Pension details Discipline and grievance procedures Date of employment

THE CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT Some terms of the employment may not be written down but are implied by law or by custom and practice in the workplace. For example, the employer has an implied duty to provide a safe, secure and healthy environment, if something has been done for a period of time (for example, allowing employees to finish at a midday on Christmas Eve) then this might not be written in the contract but the employee could expect it because it has become a custom.

THE CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT The Act also specifies the right to an itemised pay slip and rights relating to working on a Sunday, maternity/paternity leave and the termination of employment.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment has changed greatly in the last 20 years. The building of any new work premises will take environmental factors into account and will be designed to make the best and most flexible use of available space. There will be a mix of traditional desk areas, but there will also be touch down areas for using laptops and other mobile technologies and chill out areas for staff to socialise.

THE WORK ENVIRONMENT Many news builds encourage greater use of public transport by not having car parking faculties. Environmental practices – such as reduction and recycling of waste – are encouraged. Often there is little storage space, because the increase in digitisation of paperwork and electronic file storage means fewer physical files to store. It is much more common now to find people working in large open plan offices rather than in smaller traditional cellular offices (one or two people working in their own space or room bounded by permanent walls).

Homework Homework due Wednesday 30th November 2016. Outline flexible working practices that an organisation could offer. (4 marks)

Homework tips Outline “Identify key features and provide a brief description where appropriate” 4 marks – one mark awarded for any consequence outlined – a brief statement which may include facts, features or characteristics. Four working practices should be mentioned and a brief statement given.
