Spalding Elementary 5th Grade PACE: We the People Spalding Elementary 5th Grade

What is PACE? Performance Assessment of Critical Elements The Meridian School District, as part of its comprehensive assessment program, has included a performance assessment in grades 5, 8, and 12 PACE is designed to assess students’ application of skills in research, report writing and oral presenting

What is We the People? We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution introduces elementary students to the study of constitutional government in the United States. Students will work in unit groups to research specific Congressional Hearing questions pertaining to the United States Constitution and how it was developed.

Unit Themes Each unit has questions that are directly related to the overall theme of the unit: Unit 1: What basic ideas about government did the Founders have? Unit 2: How did the Framers write our Constitution? Unit 3: How does the Constitution organize our government? Unit 4: How does the Constitution protect our basic rights? Unit 5: What are the responsibilities of citizens?

Products Students will conduct research Gather Resources Take Notefacts Compose a Written Report Prepare a Speech Participate in a Simulated Congressional Hearing

Scoring & Assessment PACE: Students are scored individually on Knowledge and Delivery of Content for both their written report and oral presentation WTP: Team score in knowledge, participation, connections to Constitution, Founding Documents, current issues and Supreme Court Cases

What Can Be Done At Home and School? Gather Resources Discuss issues Take notes Practice Speech School All drafts Write Report Prepare Speech Oral Presentation

How Can You Help? Discuss current events/issues with your child Help gather resources Make sure your child understands them Check due dates often & help make sure your child is getting everything done on time Make sure your child is at school Help your child practice their speech Volunteer!

Internet Research An annotated list of Internet web sites will be posted on classroom websites We have tried to be very careful in screening for content just prior to posting sites However, websites frequently update content, so close supervision of young students is always necessary with this type of research We have discussed this in class, and monitor it closely at school We highly recommend parental supervision at home, as well If an updated website should contain inappropriate content, please contact the teacher immediately

Be A Volunteer! Each class needs five volunteers Commit one hour a day for four days Help students learn their speeches Improve delivery of speech Practice Q & A with teams
