Santa Barbara County AmeriCorps Partnership For Veterans and People Experiencing Homelessness The Need Too many individuals and families are experiencing homelessness in our communities. Based on our HUD Vulnerability Survey/Point In Time Count on any given night, over 1454 individuals are living on our streets, in emergency shelters or transitional housing facilities in Santa Barbara County. Of those our Continuum of Care has identified 198 veterans in need of outreach. The members of our program will serve at Partner Agencies that outreach to people experiencing homelessness and provide emergency shelter, transitional and permanent housing, and supportive services. They will serve individuals and families experiencing homelessness and veterans in need of services.

What Is AmeriCorps Anyway? Santa Barbara County AmeriCorps Partnership For Veterans and People Experiencing Homelessness What Is AmeriCorps Anyway? AmeriCorps is a national service program, a domestic peace corps, that engages more than 80,000 volunteers each year in intensive service to meet an identified critical need in a local community. AmeriCorps members’ activities address critical needs in education, healthy futures, clean energy/environment, veterans, economic opportunity and other unmet human needs specific to a local program design. In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance and other benefits while serving. The federal government classifies members as volunteers and not employees. Upon successful completion of their service, members receive an education award that can be used towards existing college loans or to pay continuing education costs. AmeriCorps grants are awarded annually to organizations to operate an AmeriCorps program through a competitive application process. AmeriCorps grantees have the responsibility to recruit, select, train and manage their own AmeriCorps members, and design and operate their program.

Santa Barbara County AmeriCorps Partnership For Veterans and People Experiencing Homelessness  Program Design A County-wide AmeriCorps Partnership (program) starting September 2016. Fiscal Agent is the United Way of Northern Santa Barbara County. 20 FTE AmeriCorps members in Santa Barbara County to address homelessness and its impacts. Members serve at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups. Address the community needs of providing services to veterans, families and individual experiencing homelessness. Best practice trainings that will be open to local service providers. Outcomes include housing acquisition and/or retention. Allowable activities include housing placement, outreach, housing retention, volunteer recruitment, veteran services and housing development and repair activities. AmeriCorps members participate in the recruitment of volunteers for community volunteer actives in local communities (like the Point In Time Count/Vulnerability Index Survey and the Santa Barbara County Veterans Stand Down).

Daytime Warming Center 58 unduplicated people served over 3 days: 18 Women 40 Men People came from: Rescue Mission, PATH, Freedom Warming Centers, the downtown Library, State Street, Milpas Street, Carpinteria, and Isla Vista.

State Street Re-unification Fund Clay Holdren: Proposal for local business owners to privately develop a re-unification fund to help people experiencing homelessness leave Downtown Santa Barbara in order to go to a better living situation out of town. The fund could be administered by members of the C3H Santa Barbara regional coordination group.

Working Group: Animals and Homelessness Isabelle and Michelle, CARE4PAWS: Initiated by the February C3H Santa Barbara Regional Coordination Meeting Rescue Mission will serve as the Santa Barbara hub for donated animal care supplies. Fees and financial hardships experienced by homeless animal owners. Possible solutions?
