The Book of Romans The Gospel of God

Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; 7 to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 1:1-7)

Paul’s Apostleship 1. Ground the grace of the Lord Jesus Paul’s calling as an apostle was a gift of grace through the risen Lord Jesus (cf. 15:15-16)

Paul’s Apostleship 2. Purpose “the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles” Paul was uniquely called as the “Apostle to the Gentiles” (non-Jewish) (cf. Gal. 2:7-8) Paul was driven by the missionary nature of his calling – “all the nations”

Paul’s Apostleship 2. Purpose “the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles” Paul called Gentiles to a faith that was always inseparable from obedience and to obedience that could never be separated from faith

Paul’s Apostleship 3. Motive “for His name’s sake” Paul’s ministry was on behalf of Christ for the exaltation of Christ’s name

Paul’s Apostleship 4. Application “among whom also are you” the Romans Christians belonged within the sphere of Paul’s apostolic commission (and so do we) (cf. Rom. 15:15-16)

Paul’s Apostleship 4. Application “among whom also are you” called of Jesus Christ beloved of God called as saints recipients of grace and peace from God
