McGuire’s Class Expectations 1. BE READY TO LEARN! 2. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 3. Be respectful to one another. 4. Clean up after yourself. 5. Give 100% effort. 6. Have fun (within reason)!

Positive Incentives LiveSchool points – (NEW – Pride ticket) campus wide program to “catch” kids doing the right thing. Points are awarded to each student and may be redeemed for items or pop-up parties FOL’s - (front of the line passes) SOTW - (Student of the Week)- to recognize the efforts of students in the classroom SOTM – (Student of the Month) again to recognize, but this is above and beyond Game Day - designed to be fun for students that are academically and behaviorally in good standing. Students that need extra time or assistance will use these days to get caught up. INCENTIVE

Discipline Major details can be found in 2017-18 Family Handbook In class – Refocus (no parent contact), ISI time-out or referral (both parent notification) Elsewhere on campus issued by any teacher – “Oops” ticket (resulting in lunch detention) infractions such as horseplay/running in halls, food/gum, hats/hoods in building, electronic devices (held in cafeteria and supervised by administrative staff)

(Special requests throughout the year may be forthcoming) Must haves: Composition notebook (100 page/college ruled) Pocket folder (with or without brads) Writing utensils (*pencil(s), pen(s), any color highlighter) Invisible tape (replenish as needed) *These can be regular or mechanical. If mechanical, please ensure your student has plenty of replacement lead Donate to “classroom”: Tissue (Kleenex) Glue sticks Cleansing wipes (not baby wipes) Construction paper Colored pencils Crayons (Special requests throughout the year may be forthcoming)

What NOT to bring to class…

Academic Support Opportunities Homework Club ZAP (zeros aren’t permitted) Purpose: students who did not complete work in class or for homework may attend Homework Club to finish assignments Student receives a pass to go to Homework Club at lunch Students may still purchase a lunch before going to Homework Club, or bring a lunch from home Attendance is optional Purpose: to allow students an additional opportunity to complete missing work Wednesdays from 2:00PM to 3:30PM Must attend the ENTIRE time (even if assignment is finished before end time) Parents will be notified (since arrangements will need to be made for getting home) Attendance will be mandatory (unless arrangements have been made with an administrator) Will begin after Labor Day (September 4th)

World History Curriculum G.R.A.P.E.S. (Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economy, Social Structure) Early Civilizations -Mongollon, Anazazi, Hohokam -Hopewell, Adena, Mississippian -Mayan, Incas, Aztecs World History -Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China -Greece, Rome -Middle Ages -Renaissance and Reformation

Continued… Current Events – CNN Student News (most Wednesdays) and weekly homework* Economics (incorporated within each study as well as additional material when needed) Project Based Learning Activities Independent thinking Teaching how to research *Will change to bi-weekly 2nd quarter

Textbooks Class set only – all reading/work should be completed in class 2 different text books World History: Ancient Civilizations World History: Medieval and Early Modern Times

How will they be graded? 80% Assessments Tests/quizzes Projects 20% Practice Class work Participation Extra credit (if given)

If your child is absent It is THEIR responsibility to come see me about what they have missed. Most can be found on my section of the school web page Your child has the number of days they were absent to turn in work that they’ve missed

Programs here at Akimel A-al AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) AVID class starts in seventh grade Support to help students with college readiness College outlook is seen around the campus WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) Eighth grade students mentor groups of sixth graders Friday the 4th will be spent mostly with WEB Bring a packed lunch and wear appropriate attire

“iClass” is now “Core Enrichment” Students will rotate through their core classes for more time during the time frame of fourth period Monday is extra time with Period 1 Tuesday is extra time with Period 3 Thursday is extra time with Period 5 Friday is extra time with Period 7 All of sixth grade will have 20 mins of personal silent reading time at the beginning of Core Enrichment All students will need a reading book every day

Akimel A-al PTSO! Parent Teacher Student Organization Meetings around once a month Make sure to link your Fry’s card to our school (directions under fundraising link on the PTSO’s page) Visit their page on the school’s website to get involved!

Odds and ends Suggest bringing lunch from home the first few weeks of school Dress comfortably on Friday – ladies avoid skirts/dresses (WEB activities MOST of the day) Bus transportation issues (view district web page: Departments/Transportation) – Maricopa bus riders ask front office staff It is going to be a great year

Exploration Students not in intervention groups will be scheduled into classes that provide exploration in a variety of topics These could include connections to STEM, the Arts, Technology, Typing Skills, Community Service and Health/Fitness
