Strange New Planet In this simulation of space exploration, participants plan and carry out five missions to a “planet” and communicate their discoveries to their team or partner. Multiple possible main messages, such as Exploration allows us to build new knowledge on the discoveries of others. Communication and collaboration are key
Strange New Planet Participants plan and carry out the exploration of a new “planet” as if they are looking through a telescope from Earth or traveling to the planet as a space probe, orbiter, lander, or sample return mission. For each step, the observers return to report their observations to their team, which will need to develop hypotheses and new questions that will justify “funding” the next mission.
Collaboration/Reflection Possible event / activity partners? Night Sky Network or other local amateur astronomy club Solar System Ambassadors Local scientists Videoconferenced scientists Others? Resources needed? Challenges?
Investigating the Insides How do we study the outsides of planets? How do we study their interiors? Use these mystery balls as models: Use your senses and simple tools to make observations about their masses, how their mass is distributed, their magnetic properties, etc. to infer their composition and layers. How is this similar to how spacecraft study objects in the Solar System?
Engineering Challenge Using the materials given to your group, design and build a device that can take a core sample from a potato slice
Engineering Challenge 12 craft sticks 4 straws 4 binder clips 8 rubber bands 1 Paper cup Chenille sticks toothpicks
Engineering Challenge Using the materials given to your group, design and build a device that can take a core sample from a potato slice Triple Dog-dare: which group can create the lightest (least massive) design?
Engineering Challenge Once you’ve built your device, we will give you a potato slice Test your design. Did it work? What would you modify?
