A Temporary Peace Houston was able to resign treaties with many native groups Ensured a period of peace for the Republic Anglos and Native Americans would not trespass son each other’s lands Anglos would be punished for committing crimes against Native Americans

Archives War A Mexican army of 500 soldiers occupied San Antonio, Goliad, and Refugio. Houston ordered the government archives moved to Houston. A group of Austin residents engaged in a skirmish called the Archives War with officials who tried to take away the archives.

Mexican Invasions March 1842– Rafael Vasquez leads invasion of Texas September 1842 – Adrian Woll invades Texas Invasions are defeated, but cause fear within the Republic

The Mier Expedition Texas sends Alexander Somervell to Laredo to patrol the border No activity there so he orders men to Gonzales 300 Texans occupied the Mexican city of Mier across Rio Grande Mexicans are reinforced by 900 troops After two days of fighting the Texans surrender

Drawing of the Black Beans The captured Texans are marched to Mexico City prison The Texans escaped during the march, 176 are recaptured Santa Anna order one out of every 10 Texans to be killed. Mexicans force the prisoners to draw beans to see who would die

Drawing of the Black Beans 159 beans are white 17 are black. The black beans are placed on top of the white beans and the Texans officers are ordered to draw first. Those who drew black beans were shot. Those who drew white beans were marched to Mexico City to be put in prison.

Unrest In East Texas Two groups of settlers, the Regulators and the Moderators, had been fighting for years in East Texas. Houston sent soldiers to the area to bring peace. Houston traveled to East Texas and persuaded the settlers that Texans should not be fighting each other.
