WWII: Battle in the Pacific

Warmup How did WWII impact race relations in America? Write a short paragraph including a thesis statement.

I. Bombing Campaign The fight against Japan began with bombing campaigns against Tokyo, such as Doolittle’s Raid. Many civilians were killed or injured during the raid

II. Aircraft-Carriers Carrier-base planes were extremely effective against war ships At the battle of the Coral Sea US planes stopped the Japanese in their move towards Australia. First Aircraft carrier battle, Lost 4 aircraft carriers and 250 planes. Although technically Japan won this battle it was a symbolic victory for the allies.

III. The Turning Point: Midway Americans broke the Japanese code and figured out where their fleet would be. B. Bomber planes hit the fleet before they could get their planes off the ships.

IV. Island Hopping America went on the offensive taking island after island form Japan. As they got closer to Japan the fighting intensified as many Japanese fought to the death rather than surrender. The Japanese also began using the Kamikaze tactic The Japanese had a long line of volunteers to become kamikaze pilots. Why do you think so? Do you think people in the us would have volunteered to become Kamazi pilots? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czAwsE7yLBc

Discussion A) Japan had a long line of people volunteering to be Kamikaze pilots. Why do you think so many people wanted to volunteer? B) Do you think as many people would volunteer in the US?

V. Dropping the Bomb A. After ruling out a ground invasion, President Truman order two atomic bombs to be dropped on Japan, which ended the war.
