Welcome to Year 2 A New Challenge

What is going to happen this year.. We are working towards all children in year 2 meeting their full potential. To achieve this we will be working closely with the children, parents and careers. YOU HELP IS ESSENTIAL! Children are expected to read at least 3 times a week and there reading book and communication book must be in school everyday!

Morning and Afternoon Routines We encourage INDEPENDENCE Coming into school Reading books Letters Homework PE kits Children need to organise their own belongings To help you child with this, please ensure all belongings are clearly named

What's different? SAT’s and TA New Curriculum

Homework Homework will be set the same as in year 1. With activities being completed over a half term. Encourage independence. Opportunity to share school learning. Reading Children will be given weekly Spellings to practise at home.

How you can help with English

Top Ten Tips to Support Your Child’s Reading Common Exception words Common suffixes Look for these when reading with your child Read aloud many words quickly and accurately without overt sounding and blending

Spelling The new National Curriculum has a huge emphasis on spelling. To help your child with this when they are completing homework or writing at home get them to check their spelling and support them with the correct spelling. Use the spelling words and keywords in a sentence. Strategies used at school – Fred fingers and Fred rhythms. Must be able to spell common exception words.

Wherever possible allow your child the opportunities to write!!! Writing Ideas to use to encourage your child to write Writing is all about seizing the opportunities - Give your child a purpose to write! shopping lists, directions, cards, notes, notices, diary, invitations, and labels Make writing fun and meaningful. Allow them to use a notice board, notepad. Encourage them to use different stationary - pens, coloured pencils, gel pens. Wherever possible allow your child the opportunities to write!!! Postcards are much appreciated if you do take a holiday. Use any opportunity to encourage writing!

What their writing needs to include…. demarcating most sentences with capital letters and full stops and with some use of question marks and exclamation marks using sentences with different forms in their writing (statements, questions, exclamations and commands using some expanded noun phrases to describe and specify using present and past tense mostly correctly and consistently spelling many common exception words spelling some words with contracted forms

adding suffixes to spell some words correctly in their writing e. g adding suffixes to spell some words correctly in their writing e.g. –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly using the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters in some of their writing Children will be working on all of these features in school but any extra work they do at home will support them further!

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar SPAG Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Children need to know and use the following terminology.. Noun Noun phrase Verb Adverb Adjective Children will complete a SPAG test in June.

Helping your child to learn in Maths

The New National curriculum will build upon what the children have been learning in Year 1. The key areas will still be covered – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. With a large focus on reasoning and problem solving – Reasoning Test Checking children’s understanding and helping them make connections and explain how they know.

Reasoning Instead of just counting in tens…. I think of a number I ended up on 23. I added 10. Where did I start? Make connections….. I have a cup it now has 45ml in it. I added 20ml. How many ml where in the cup at the start?

Show the children a set of numbers. What digits do you look at first Show the children a set of numbers. What digits do you look at first? Why? How would you explain to a friend how to order numbers? True of False You need more tens for 66 than 67? Prove it using representations. Using equipment can you explain how to partition two digit numbers showing the value of each digit?

= 24 + = 45 Main changes in Year 2 More emphasis on the mental mathematics expectations – Arithmetic Test Inverse operations for checking. 24 + = 45 Greater range of fractions are explored including equivalent of quarters. =

Make connections Where have you seen something like this before? What do you already know? What’s the same / What’s different? Convince me! What do you notice?

Progress and Assessment At Parents evening you will be informed of your child’s progress in Reading, Writing and Maths in relation to national standards e.g. In reading James is working at age related expectations. Progress is monitored daily in lessons. You will be informed of your child’s targets at Parents’ Evening. All children’s progress is closely monitored by the Senior Leadership Team and interventions will be made where necessary. Parents will be informed of this.

Emotional Wellbeing Please tell us if anything has happened at home that might be affecting your child in school. The change from Year 1 to Year 2 is usually a smooth transition as routines remain broadly the same and they are familiar with the members of staff. However the move to year 2 provides a fresh start for all children.
