KS1 Assessment Arrangements 2016-17

Key stage 1 assessment Year 2 is the end of ‘Key stage 1’ This is a key assessment point in the National Curriculum The core elements of the curriculum are assessed Reading Writing Maths Most of the assessments are done by the class teacher as normal class work. Some formal testing is required but the results stay in school and inform the teacher assessment.

What are the expectations? Children are assessed to be either… Working Towards the Expected Level Working At the Expected Level Working at a Greater Depth These judgements are based on a number of objectives from the Year 1 and Year 2 reading , writing and maths curriculum.

How are the judgements formed? Through the year, and particularly from January, independent work will be assessed against key objectives. Children will be given the opportunity to demonstrate key skills, this provides the evidence for the final judgements. Teachers within this school and from other schools meet to compare work and moderate levels. The local authority may also visit the school and look at the evidence collected. All the criteria in the assessment framework have to be met, children have to demonstrate this several times in their independent work.

Working towards the expected standard- Writing The pupil can write sentences that are sequenced to form a short narrative, after discussion with the teacher: demarcating some sentences with capital letters and full stops segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling some correctly spelling some common exception words* forming lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place forming lower-case letters of the correct size relative to one another in some of the writing using spacing between words.

Working at the expected standard- writing The pupil can write a narrative about their own and others’ experiences (real and fictional), after discussion with the teacher: • demarcating most sentences with capital letters and full stops and with some use of question marks and exclamation marks • using sentences with different forms in their writing (statements, questions, exclamations and commands) • using some expanded noun phrases to describe and specify • using present and past tense mostly correctly and consistently • using co-ordination (or / and / but) and some subordination (when / if / that / because) • segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling many correctly • spelling many common exception words* • spelling some words with contracted forms* • adding suffixes to spell some words correctly in their writing e.g. –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly* • using the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters in some of their writing • writing capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower case letters • using spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.

When will the children sit the tests? Maths – May There will be 2 test papers – Arithmetic and Reasoning. The reasoning paper will be read to all children to ensure their ability to read does not affect their maths ability. Reading/SPAG - May 2x reading papers 1 x Punctuation and Grammar 1 x spelling

Example questions

How will the tests be administered? We will make sure the children do not know that they are taking the tests beforehand. We do not want to cause any stress or worry. Small groups of children (5 or 6 at a time) will be taken to the library. The children will be encouraged to do their best.

What can you do to help? Let me know if there are any issues worrying your child or any reason where I need to delay their testing. Please do not tell your children that they will be taking test. We do not want to cause unnecessary stress and worrying. Carry one reading and practising spellings with your child. Complete any homework that your child brings home Practise x2,x5,x10 and number bonds for rapid recall Finally, make sure your child has had a good nights sleep the night before and they have had a good breakfast!
