NASA eClips 4D (March 22, 2017) Programmatics PI/Institution: Shelley Spears, National Institute of Aerospace PI Email: shelley.spears@nianet.org Period of Performance: 1/4/16-1/3/21 Summary Description: NASA eClips™ 4D is a multi-dimensional approach to improve student science literacy by addressing identified science misconceptions. Program attributes include: research-based approaches to teaching and learning; student-produced multi-media content; STEM career connections; field-testing within an under-served population; bi-lingual content development; broad dissemination network; established audience and reputation. NASA eClips™ is a widely utilized, proven and effective multi-media educational program. Developed by the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) over the past seven years, the suite currently contains 252 videos, 33 resources and has ~57,000 web views and downloads monthly. NASA eClips 4D (March 22, 2017) cont. Evaluation Risks/Areas of Concern Added a school district to create Spotlite videos. Correcting technical error on “Life Cycle of a Star” video; improved review process to mitigate future errors. The internal evaluator, Dr. Hilarie B. Davis of TLC Inc., is using a mixed methods approach (Frechtling, 2010). IRB Review complete – exempt status Pilot study on student production of Spotlite videos completed in June 2016 and data used to refine model and examine effectiveness in students’ developing understanding of misconceptions Interactive lesson plans reviewed for face validity; minor revisions suggested and completed Pilot study using a quasi-experimental design in progress on Spotlite videos and interactive lessons with 10 science teachers and 300+ students to be completed by mid-June, reported in early July. Teacher focus group feedback on student-produced SME2 (career and science content questions posed by students) videos completed by end of academic year. Measureable Achievement/Accomplishments Pre/post gains in concept understanding by pilot group of Spotlite students show program is potentially effective. Introduced Spotlite video design challenge to new group of students, collected baseline on understanding of concept and communication. Pilot teachers have begun implementation of Spotlite topics and lessons in the classroom. Concept pre test (teachers and students) as baseline for studying effectiveness. 6 new Spotlite topics are in production at Arlington Public Schools and Hampton City Schools; expected completion by end of academic year. Released NASA eClips video, “Launchpad: Engineering Design to Support Scientific Discovery” Q217 (1300 views); “Citizen Science” video released Q416 has 3033 views. https://nasaeclips.arc.nasa.gov/playlists/launchpad?v=launchpad-engineering-design-to-support-scientific-discovery Filmed host and SME for the NASA eClips video on Earth Systems. Kicked off Year 2 production plan for NASA eClips video segments on Off-World Manufacturing (Grades 9-12), Green Fuel (Grades K-5), Cubesats (Grades 6-8), and Movement of the Sun (Grades K-5). (See Slide 5 for selection process.) Internal review complete of 5 SME2 drafts produced by Newport News Telecommunications Program students; preparing for teacher feedback. Development of printed marketing collateral info card Opportunities Continue to leverage SMD initiatives to include researchers in outreach. Expanding # of districts, teachers and students working with the NASA eClips 4D team in the development of Spotlite videos to correct common science misconceptions. Pursuing additional dissemination and collaboration partnerships with professional organizations (i.e., VCEC, VTEEA, ITEEA) Planning 2017 eclipse awareness in SC with local public library system (~800 students) Exploring new state initiative to include career connection as a potential audience of SME2 videos as supporting resource for core academic instruction and career counseling. Retitled NASA eClips video #4 from Climate Change to Earth Systems. Adding level of SMD HQ SME review to the NASA eClips production process. Look Ahead Cross-Collaboration Status/Opportunity Work with Newport News Telecommunications Program to edit Subject Matter Expert as Educator (SME2) interviews as a STEM career resource. Build out additional dissemination avenues for new products to increase metrics of new and existing assets. Promote NASA eClips video on “Engineering Design to Support Scientific Discovery” following newly developed dissemination plan. Production of NASA eClips video segments (see topic selection process on Slide 5) #4 Earth Systems #5 Movement of the Sun #6 Off World Manufacturing Creation of interactive lessons for new Spotlite topics: Seasons (Grades 3-5) Heat and Temperature (Grades 3-5 and 6-9) Gravity on Falling Objects (Grades 3-5 and 6-9) Refine Outreach and Conference Plan for 2017 (see list of upcoming events to be supported on next slide) Work with digital media teachers and students to complete production of Spotlite videos during academic semester. Modification of Solar Map NASA eClips activity to support 2017 eclipse event; possible inclusion with Helio/eClips resources Develop plan to share all NASA eClips resources related to SciAct collective programs. Review event/conference participation by SciAct collective and identify leveraging opportunities. Link GLOBE resources to the NASA eClips video, “Real World: Citizen Science,” and provided Tony Murphy with the video link for his use. Discussions with Challenger Learning Center to determine ways to utilize NASA eClips resources to support flipped classroom instruction. Plan defined with Museum Alliance to incorporate NASA eClips resources into “weekly wrap-up” emails to the museum network.

NASA eClips 4D Monthly Status (March 22, 2017) 2017 Outreach and Conference Plan – Upcoming Events to be Supported by NASA eClips Feb 9-10 – Virginia Children’s Engineering Convention (VCEC), Roanoke, VA (science and engineering teachers) Feb 18 – Black History Celebration at the Virginia Air and Space Center, Hampton, VA (community) May 5 – Homeschool Day at the Virginia Air and Space Center, Hampton, VA (students) May 6 – LaRC Centennial Mini Maker Faire, Hampton, VA (10,000 attendees expected) May 20 – STEM Community Day, Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA (K-16 and community) July 11-12 – Summer Reading Program at four Hampton Public Libraries, Hampton, VA (up to 800 students, sharing resources related to the total solar eclipse) July 24-27 – Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association (VTEEA) Annual Conference, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA Aug 1-4 – VALHEN Hispanic College Institute, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA (sharing resources related to the total solar eclipse, highlighting NASA eClips video segments, and running a focus group to determine what teachers would like to see in the Spanish vocabulary lessons)

NASA eClips 4D Monthly Status (March 22, 2017) NASA eClips Topic Selection Process Spotlite Topic Selection Process NASA eClips videos are short, relevant educational segments.  Topics for the videos are identified following a comprehensive gap analysis selection process. This process is delineated here: Topics for upcoming NASA eClips videos (Y2) are solicited from the SMD SciAct Collective with the intent of developing educational video segments that will meet a variety of educational needs, increase usage based on demand and build leveraging opportunities for collaboration among members of the SciAct Collective. Suggestions from the SciAct Collective are compared and matched with already developed NASA resources (i.e., NASA Wavelength digital library) and, in particular, the NASA eClips library to determine if the suggested topics 1) fill an identified content gap, 2) support NASA Spotlite production, or 3) are a warranted replacement. Topics identified as “needed,” based upon the above criteria, are aligned with national standards (NGSS, CCSS-M, ITEEA, ISTE) to assure a standards-based educational need. These topics are aligned with current NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) priorities and NASA Communication priorities. Identified topics are shared with NASA stakeholders for concurrence. Each NASA Spotlite video addresses a common science misconception.  Topics for the videos are identified following a comprehensive gap analysis selection process. This process is delineated here: Science misconceptions are identified by national and reputable assessment tools and organizations.  The NASA eClips educators identify misconceptions from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests, Misconceptions-Oriented Standards-based Assessment (MOSART) resources, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) resources, and NASA educational resources. Teachers, participating within an established NASA eClips Pilot Group, identify five topics for new Spotlite production based upon classroom experiences. The topics selected by the teachers in the Pilot Group are aligned with current NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) priorities and NASA Communication priorities. These topics are shared with NASA stakeholders for concurrence.
