*Acceptable Use Policy by Jutti Marsh The LAUSD AUP* Policy *Acceptable Use Policy by Jutti Marsh

Remember: Teachers must also follow the acceptable use policy

AUP ~ Acceptable Uses To be used for educational and professional purposes Research for lesson material Personal use (within district guidelines) is acceptable after work hours

AUP ~ Unacceptable Uses Accessing, downloading or transmitting pornography of any kind Accessing other material deemed inappropriate by the school board Running a personal business via LAUSD Net Use of anonymous e-mail sites Selling for personal financial gain

AUP ~ Unacceptable Uses Using the Internet for non-school related fundraising or public relations such as solicitation for religious purposes or lobbying for political purposes Threatening or defamatory statements Using profane, abusive or impolite language Downloading/copying copyrighted materials*

*Copyright Issues Educational fair use allows classroom use of copyrighted materials in the following ways: Teachers may copy limited materials to be used in their courses Broadcast materials may be recorded for use in class but may not be distributed beyond that class and must be erased Digital media may be copied to be used as part of a presentation in class but cannot be published (on the web) or distributed (on cd’s) For additional info go to http://fairuse.stanford.edu/index.html and select “Academic and Educational Permissions.”

Teachers & TA’s are responsible for student online safety Don’t rely on the “filter” to keep out all objectionable material Place computer monitors so you can see what students are doing If students are working independently at a computer check on them periodically Students are never to use the Internet without adult supervision

Paperwork! All faculty must read and sign the AUP each year Students must take and pass the “Student Internet Test” each year Students who are unable to read the “test” may have it read to them All students must have a current (this academic year) permission form signed by their parents These forms can be found at: http://www.lausd.k12.ca.us/lausd/lausdnet/aup.html

Remember, you are the best “filter.”
