Year Six Rowan Welcome Meeting Taking Pride and Aiming High

Aims of this meeting To enable parents to meet some of the Year 6 staff. To explain the main aims of the year. To give suggestions for how you could support your child in their learning.

What are the aims of Year 6 To consolidate and build on prior knowledge Using and applying their skills across the curriculum Learn the Year 6 curriculum Prepare children for secondary school

Attendance The key to academic success is EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE. In order for your child to be successful at school we expect them to be here EVERY DAY unless they are ill. As a school we have HIGH EXPECTATIONS of your child. To maximise learning, attendance should be more than 96%. HOLIDAYS are not to be taken during term time. A RECORD of any holidays taken will be kept in your child’s file. Any doctor, hospital APPOINTMENTS should be made for after school. Taking Pride and Aiming High

Punctuality Punctuality is VITAL. Pupils are expected to arrive in school between 8:45am-9:00am, however the nearer to 8:45am , the more learning we can achieve. Pupils are marked as late if they arrive after 9:00am when the register closes. Taking Pride and Aiming High

End of Year Expectations READING I am familiar with and can talk about a wide range of books and text types. I can discuss the features of these types. I can read books that are structured in different ways. I can recognise texts that contain features from more than one text type. I can evaluate how effectively texts are structured and presented. I can read non-fiction texts to help with my learning. I read accurately and check that I understand. I can recommend books to others and give reasons for my recommendation. I can identify themes in texts. I can read between the lines and infer what is meant. I can discuss the language choices of an author

End of Year Expectations WRITING I can identify the audience and purpose of the writing. I can choose the appropriate form and register for the audience and purpose of the writing. I use grammatical structures and features and choose vocabulary appropriate to the audience, purpose and degree of formality to make meaning clear and create effect. I use a range of sentence starters to create specific effects. I can use developed noun phrases to add detail to sentences. I use the passive voice to present information with a different emphasis. I use commas to mark phrases and clauses. I can sustain and develop ideas logically in narrative and non-narrative writing. I can use character, dialogue and action to advance events in narrative writing. I can summarise a text, conveying key information in writing. I can use the full range of punctuation marks.

End of Year Expectations MATHS Number, place value, approximation and estimation/rounding • I can read, write, order and compare numbers up to10,000,000. • I can determine the value of each digit in numbers up to 10,000,000. • I can round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy. • I can use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across zero. • I can solve number problems and practical problems with the above.

End of Year Expectations Children are also expected to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Interpret and solve problems involving ratio Understand and calculate fractions, decimals and percentages Use algebra and simple formula Read, write and convert between standard units, converting measurements of length, mass, volume and time from a smaller unit of measure to a larger unit, and vice versa, using decimal notation of up to 3 decimal places. Draw and interpret a variety of graphs and charts including pie charts.

Spellings

How parents can support… Talk about what they are learning. Question them ‘How do you know…?’ Support homework, BUT don’t do it for them. Practise of times tables, including both the multiplication and division facts. Reading at home; Ask questions about the text and characters. Spellings practise (see year 5 and 6 curriculum list). Take any opportunity to make links between real life and maths, such as calculating with time, interpreting timetables, reading scales etc.

PE Kits Our normal physical education days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please send in PE kits every Monday and take home by Friday each week.

Pencil Cases The school have provided each child with a pencil case and ruler. There are colouring pencils and protractors available in class. We politely request that parents provide their child with writing pencils, a glue stick and a rubber.

Home Learning Homework will consist of a maths activity, an English activity and spellings each week. Every child is expected to read at least four times a week and get it signed by an adult Homework will go out on a Friday and is expected back by a Thursday. Spellings will be tested on a Friday.

Online safety New technologies have become integral to the lives of children and young people in today’s society, both within schools and in their lives outside school and we want to keep our children safe. We will does this by: It is woven into our curriculum and we have an extra focus on E-Safety at the time of national E-Safety week in February. Every member of staff, parent and child will be asked to sign an Acceptable Use Policy. This is to ensure: • That young people will be responsible users and stay safe while using the internet and other communications technologies for educational, personal and recreational use. • That school ICT systems and users are protected from accidental or deliberate misuse that could put the security of the systems and users at risk. • That parents and carers are aware of the importance of e-safety and are involved in the education and guidance of young people with regard to their on-line behaviour. We will be holding an e-safety information session this year. - If you have any questions on how to keep your child safe please ask.

Trips There is planned to be one trip or visitor per half term with the main activity being the Activity Week in July, which will be a 4 night residential for those who have paid their deposit. Payment cards and a letter will be sent this week. We will keeps costs to a minimum (if any) due to the expense involved in the residential trip.

Performances and Assemblies Year 6 will be performing in a shared production with Year 5 in the summer term. There will be a class assembly. There is a Harvest Festival assembly. There will also be a leaver’s assembly in last week of the year.

Next week you will receive a letter inviting you to join Seesaw. This is an app which is an online learning journal for your child. Teachers will be posting photos, videos and work your child has created. Family members can like and comment on items, allowing you to engage with your child’s learning. It will give you a portal into your child’s life at school. This is another excellent way we are communicating with families about the learning and progress your child is making, so we ask that everyone signs up to this.
