Unit 12 Modern Georgia Last CDA May 17th

End of the County Unit System In the 1960’s two rulings by the federal court brought changes to Georgia’s political structure. On April, 1962 the Georgia federal court ruled that the county unit system violated the 14th Amendment. Political power shifted from the rural areas to more urban areas. It benefited of the ruling allowed more African Americans to be elected to public offices. Leroy Johnson became the first African American state senator in Georgia since Reconstruction.

Reapportionment Now one man/woman = one vote. The General Assembly had to reapportion (redraw) its Congressional voting district to ensure that the districts were equal to population size.

Rise of the Two Party System Since the end of Reconstruction Georgia was dominated by a one party system. During the 1980’s and 1990’s politics in Georgia went through a major shift in many southern states. The election of 2002, Republicans ended over 100 years of rule by Democrats. Georgia elected it’s first Republican Governor, the Senate, and House of Representatives since reconstruction.

James (Earl) Carter Jr. Carter was elected to the Georgia Senate in 1962 Elected Governor in 1970 He served as President of the United States of America from 1976 to 1980. Carter won most of his elections with the help of Andrew Young who helped Carter with the African American support.
