A Reading from the Book of Genesis

there was chaos and nothing but darkness. In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, there was chaos and nothing but darkness. God’s spirit was like a breeze that blows across the water. 14

Then God said, ‘Let there be light’ 15

And there was light. And God said, Wow! The light is good! 16

and the darkness ‘night’. God called the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night’. 17

Then God made the sky and the land. 18

God called the water ‘seas’. And the dry land ‘earth’. 19

God said; ‘Wow! These are good!’ 20

God said; ‘Let plants, trees and flowers grow on the earth, each with their seed inside’ 21

God said; ‘Wow! These are good!’ 22

God said, ‘Let there be lights in the sky God said, ‘Let there be lights in the sky. God made the Sun, moon and stars. God said; ‘Wow! These are good!’ 23

God created every kind of animal… fish that swim in the sea, 24

and birds that fly in the air. God said; ‘Wow! These are good! 25

Then God made all the creatures that live on the land; cattle, reptiles 26

every kind of wild animal, God said: ‘Wow! These are good! 27

Then God created human beings. He made them male and female. 28

and take care of the world. God blessed them and sent them forth to multiply and take care of the world.

God looked at everything he had made and he said: ‘Wow! These are really good . 30

And so the heavens and earth were completed in all their array. God rested on the last day after all the work he had done. God blessed the day and made it holy. 31

Let us pray

I close my eyes, drew back the curtain To see for certain, what I thought I knew Far far away, someone was weeping But the world was sleeping Any dream will do

I wore my coat (I wore my coat), with golden lining (Ahhh) Bright colours shining (Ahhhh), wonderful and new And in the east (and in the east), the dawn was breaking (Ahhh) And the world was waking (Ahhhh) Any dream will do

A crash of drums, a flash of light My golden coat flew out of sight The colours faded into darkness I was left alone

May I return (May I return) to the beginning (Ahhh) The light is dimming (Ahhhh), and the dream is too The world and I (The world and I), we are still waiting (Ahhh) Still hesitating (Ahhhh) Any dream will do

The angel, Gabriel, from heaven came, His wings as drifted snow, His eyes as flame. ‘All hail,’ said he, ‘Thou lowly maiden, Mary Most highly favoured lady. Gloria!

For know, a blessed mother thou shall be! All generations laud and honour thee. Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, Most highly favoured lady. Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head. ‘To me be as it pleaseth God,’ she said. ‘My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name!’ Most highly favoured lady. Gloria!

Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn; And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say: Most highly favoured lady. Gloria!

Light of Christ guide us

Longing for light, we wait in darkness. Longing for truth, we turn to you. Make us your own, your holy people. Light for the world to see. Christ be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Shine in your church gathered today.

Longing for peace, our world is troubled. Longing for hope, many despair. Your word alone has pow’r to save us. Make us your living voice. Christ be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Shine in your church gathered today.

Longing for food, many are hungry. Longing for water, many still thirst. Make us your bread, broken for others, shared until all are fed. Christ be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Shine in your church gathered today.

Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone. Christ be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Shine in your church gathered today.

Many the gifts, many the people, many the hearts that yearn to belong Let us be servants to one another, making your kingdom come Christ be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Shine in your church gathered today.

Come Lord Jesus, come again

The Blessing

Hark now hear the angels sing A new king born today And we will live forever more Because of Christmas day. Trumpets sound and Angels sing Listen to what they say, that we will live forever more because of Christmas day.

While shepherds watched their flocks by night They see a bright new shining star They hear a choir of angels sing Music seemed to come from afar

Hark now hear the angels sing A new king born today And we will live forever more Because of Christmas day. Trumpets sound and Angels sing Listen to what they say, that we will live forever more because of Christmas day.

Now, Joseph and his wife, Mary, Come to Bethlehem that night, They find no place to lay her child, Not a single room was in sight.

Hark now hear the angels sing A new king born today And we will live forever more Because of Christmas day. Trumpets sound and Angels sing Listen to what they say, that we will live forever more because of Christmas day.

By and by they find a nook In a stable so forlorn And in a manger cold and dark Mary’s little boy was born

Hark now hear the angels sing A new king born today And we will live forever more Because of Christmas day. Trumpets sound and Angels sing Listen to what they say, that we will live forever more because of Christmas day.

Thank you for coming this evening. Have a safe journey home.
