OTS I – Pentateuch – Leviticus Leviticus – Overview 3rd book of the Bible Contains more of the direct words of God than any other book in the Bible. Its main theme is, “How a sinful people may approach a holy God.” Can be broken down into 9 sections regarding different kinds of laws. Literally means “that which pertains to Levi.”

OTS I – Pentateuch – Leviticus – Offerings Law of Offerings 5 Different type of offering are mentioned in Leviticus, chapters 1-7. Burnt Offering Types Christ and the consecration of the believer. Was an acknowledgement of guilt before God. Was the most complete and significant of the offerings. Offerer put their hand on the head of the offering as an act of confession and faith.

Signified surrender to service. Oil poured over fine flour signifies the Holy Spirit. Frankincense signifies Intercession and meditation. The loaves were to be without leaven (Pride/Hypocrisy), honey (sensual indulgence) and should include salt (honesty/preservation from corruption.)

OTS I – Pentateuch – Leviticus – Purity Law of Purity (Leviticus 11-15) 4 distinctions: Clean Unclean Leprous Bodily Discharges Dietary laws showed Israel’s separation from the world as God’s holy nation. The laws of Purity show a picture of God’s standards for holiness.

OTS I – Pentateuch – Leviticus – Atonement The Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16) A day which all looked eagerly toward. A day devoted to repentance and worship The day the high priest would enter the Most Holy Place and make atonement for sins. Pointed directly to Calvary and Christ. The day of Atonement is a reiteration of everything covered from chapters 1-15.

OTS I – Pentateuch – Leviticus – Sacrifice Law of Sacrifice (Leviticus 17) 2 main ideas: Place Sacrifices must be brought a certain way. The tabernacle door is a type of Christ. To not sacrifice God’s way means that you sacrifice to someone or something else. Substance Blood has always been the cornerstone of sacrifice. Blood alone made the atonement. The main theme of this law is that faith must always be accompanied by obedience.

OTS I – Pentateuch – Leviticus – Relationships Law of Relationships (Leviticus 18-22) Relationship Laws: A necessary “reset” from the moral corruption of Egypt. Laws pertaining to: Sexuality Acquaintances Respect Spirituality Discipline Social standing Hatred / revenge Integrity immigration
