Manners Lesson – Respect Intended Student Outcomes - Ontario Curriculum Expectations Language Arts Grade 3 – Oral Communication Listening to Understand Grade 3 – Reading Reading for Meaning

Grade 3 – Reading with Fluency Grade 3 – Writing Developing and organizing content Applying knowledge of language conventions and Presenting Written Work Effectively

Rationale Students will be able to relate Respect with everyday life and activities using, reading, writing and oral communication. Introduction: Have the word Respect written on a large piece of chart paper or white board. Ask the students to give you as many words that they can think of that relate to respect.

Lesson Procedure: 1. As a class, students will give you as many words that they think respect means or relates to (if students are having trouble starting off prompt them by doing a short demonstration of respecting one of their classroom items. For example, walk past a desk and knock something off. Pick it up and put it back where it was. Ask the students if this was a respectful action or not. Continue to use prompts if students are still having trouble contributing to the brainstorm chart.)   2. When enough words have been given encourage the students to choose 1 word that they feel really defines Respect. This can be done by first putting the students into groups of 4. They must then choose their top choice for a definition. When all the groups have their words get them to write them on the board. 3. Have the students make synonyms for the words they chose in their groups. Encourage the use of a dictionary to help them with this task. 4. Who does Allah tell us to respect in the Quran? What types of words does Allah use to show to us we need to respect certain people? Guide the students towards answers like, Prophets, angels, those with knowledge, orphans and parents. When you get to parents ask the students if they know hadiths about respect for our parents. If they know any have one of them tell the class otherwise tell the students and write it on the board. (Appendix 1)

Lesson Procedure: 5. Write the name of Prophet Isa (AS) on the board. Ask each group to get a Quran and find the Sura – Maryam (Sura 19 ). Ask them to read the beginning of it in their groups and find an Aya (Verse) or Ayats that talk about respecting parents. (Other ayats can also be used including: Quran 17:23, 31:14, 24:17, ) Have the students research Ayats of the Quran that relate to respect. Write the Ayats on the board. (photocopies or copies of English Qurans will be useful)    6. Using the words and Ayats from above the students will create a short description about what they feel respect means to them. Ask them to include at least 3 words from the brainstorm session and at least 1 ayat from the Quran. How do they show respect in their everyday lives?

Conclusion Share your description with your partner. If students would like to present their ideas to the class this can be done at this point. Additional Activities /Extension Activities Have the students work in pairs and choose any two Ayats of the Quran, one that deals with respect and another one that deals with any other issue. Have them read them aloud and ask the rest of the class or their partners to identify the Ayat that deals with respect. Additional Activities/extension activities for Respect Create a recipe for Respect. What ingredients would you need to make it “right.” Students create their own recipes for respect in groups. The teacher displays the recipes around the school/class. Students stand in a circle and say something similar that they are to another person or something they didn’t know about another person. Learning about classmates and friends creates bonds and enables respect between each other.   Respect sort (media literacy) Create phrases or words that are respectful and disrespectful. Students work in groups/pairs or individually to sort them on a T chart. Students find pictures for as many words as they can (or pictures that represent the words) and use it a visual display of respect and disrespect.

Additional Activities /Extension Activities – Part 2 Role Play (drama) - Pretend you are about to meet a Prophet – Organize a dinner party that he will be attending. Create a list of ways you should act, food you would serve, things you would say. Why would you need those things? Try and relate them to respect. Act out what your house would look like before he comes. Use your family members, mother, father, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, friends, nieces, nephews. When your skit is complete explain why you did some things but not others. What is the difference between respect and fear? Read the story…. Relate this idea to Allah. Have a short class discussion about why we should follow the Quran. Is it because we are afraid or because we respect Allah’s laws? Imam Ali (RA) saying “I do not worship Allah for fear of hell or hope for heaven, I worship him because he is worthy of worship.”   In groups of 4 think of different times at school, home, sports teams that you have listened to someone because of fear not because of respect. Students will write them on pieces of paper (all papers must be the same size). When this is complete, think of the same places or different ones when you have listened to someone because you loved them or respected them. Write them down on the same size papers. Create a class pile of Respect and a class pile for fear. Which pile is bigger? What does it tell you about why we do things?

If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination. Sura Luqman, Ayat 14- Translation by Muhammed Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship and she brings him forth with hardship, and bearing of him , and the weaning of him is 30 months, till when he attains full strength and reaches 40 years, he says: “My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my Off-spring good. Truly, I have turned to You in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims.” Sura Al-Ahqaf (The Dunes) Ayat 15 - Translation by Muhammed Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan

Do you hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up (again) when generations before me have passed away (without rising)?” Whlie they (father and mother) invoke Allah for help (and rebuke their son): “Woe to you! Believe! Verily, the Promise of Allah is true.” But he says: “This is nothing but the tales of the ancient. Sura Al-Ahqaf (The Dunes) Ayat 17 - Translation by Muhammed Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan “And we have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents, but if they strive to make you join with Me (in worship) of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do.” Sura Al-Ankabut (The Spider) Ayat 8 - Translation by Muhammed Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan

APPENDIX Hadith It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (RA) that Rasool – Allah (PBUH) said, “When a man (or a woman) dies, all his/her good deeds come to an end, except three: a) Ongoing charity done by the deceased (Sadaqa –e-Jaariya)…b) Beneficial knowledge of the decesased that will keep on helping the others…and third…) Righteous son/daughter who will pray for him/her (the deceased).” Hadith Number 4223 (1631), Book of Wills, Sahih Muslim, Volume 4 It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (RA) said: A man came to Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) and asked, “Which of the people is most deserving of my best companionship?” He said, “Your mother.” He said, “Then who?” He said, “Then your mother.” He said, “Then who?” He said, “Then your mother.” He said, “Then who?” He said, “Then your father.” Hadith Number 5971, Book of Al-Adab, Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8; Hadith Number 6500 (2548), Book of Al-Birr, Sahih Muslim, Volume 6.
