Welcome to Back-to-School Night Third Grade – Room 015 Ms. Laura Ciampa

Important Times School begins: 8:00 a.m. Homeroom: until 8:15 a.m. Snack: around 10:00 a.m. Lunch: 11:45-12:27 p.m. Dismissal: 2:30 p.m.

Specials Monday- Art Tuesday –Library/Media Wednesday –Gym & Spanish Thursday – Spanish& Music Friday- Gym Students must wear sneakers on gym days. Books may be returned early.

Homework Homework will be given regularly in reading, math, and word study. Homework will be assigned in the other subjects at times. Homework is posted every afternoon. Students are responsible for copying assignments into their planners. Notices are put into the student mailboxes. Students need to only take their binders home. Each math chapter will be in the Travel Folder. Please keep it in there until the test is taken. Please see my webpage for updated homework assignments, projects, and test dates. Check the Travel Folder daily for study guides, notices, etc..

Homework Policy Please ensure that your child completes the homework! Binder: Includes the Planner, Travel Folder, Reading/Word Study Notebook, and Assessment Folder. (This binder will go home each day and should be returned the next day.) No consequences, only rewards. The kids who complete all their homework each marking period will be able to participate in a party at lunch. I will notify you if the homework is not being completed.

Language Arts Literacy Curriculum Language Arts Literacy We follow the workshop model for reading and writing. This includes… Read- aloud Mini-lesson Independent work Conferencing Sharing Word Study is done in lieu of spelling. There are three different word study lists based on the inventory test given in September.

Curriculum-continued Math: Go Math! Curriculum and memorizing the multiplication facts Science: Pearson Interactive Science Social Studies: Kids Discover-Houghton Mifflin Harcourt(new) Technology is integrated in all subject areas. Students will store their documents and complete projects using Google Drives. Usernames and Passwords: There will be a sheet in your children’s binders.

Assessments The students will be assessed in all subjects. Math: Tests will be given every 2-3 weeks. A review sheet will be assigned as homework the night before the test. Multiplication Facts: Study the facts Word Study: bi-weekly on Fridays Reading and Writing: Their notebooks and assignments will be graded using a rubric. Students will also be assessed on skills, but do not need to study for this. The test is based on their application of the skills covered.

Assessment-continued Science and Social Studies: The students will be tested on each unit. Usually, each unit takes 4-5 weeks. Students will also be assessed on projects. Rubrics will be used to grade those assignments. Assessments Folders: These folders are located in the binder. Check for tests every 2-3 weeks. Sign the sheet and make comments if necessary. Please keep all tests in the folder until the conclusion of the marking period.

Grading Scale A= 90-100 B= 80-89 C= 70-79 D= 60-69 E= 59 & below 4 = Exceeding Learning Standards: Student performance demonstrates an understanding of the knowledge and skills beyond expectations and consistently shows evidence of higher level thinking. 3 = Meeting Learning Standards: Student performance demonstrates a thorough understanding of the knowledge and skills expected at this grade level. 2 = Approaching Learning Standards: Student performance demonstrates a partial understanding of the 1 = Not Meeting Learning Standards: Student performance does not demonstrate an understanding of the ** Progress reports will be given out quarterly if needed.

Conferences & Report Cards Report Card Dates: sign and return envelopes November 14, 2017 February 6, 2018 April 13, 2018 June 25, 2018 Parent -Teacher Conference Dates: Nov. 15th (evening) & 16th (afternoon) February 7th (evening) & 8th(afternoon) **Please note that times slots are given on a first come first serve basis. I will use Sign-up Genius online.

Mystery Guest Please come and visit our class! Twice a month Read your favorite story Teach us about your culture Do a craft with the class Email me if you would like to be our guest. Tell me the date and what you will be doing. A time will be determined based on our class schedule for that day and your availability.

Standardized Testing PARCC is in April/May DON’T WORRY!!! We will prepare for it in class. In addition, the school will offer prep classes.

Additional Notes Please replenish your child’s pencil supply as the year continues. When sending money into school, place in an envelope with your child’s name, class (3Ciampa), amount enclosed, and what the money is for.(ex. lunch money) Tissues and baby wipes are always needed and appreciated! Volunteers will be needed for our field trip and to provide snacks for parties. Emails will be sent out. The class parent is Mira Kwon.
